Coming together with the lighting community to celebrate some amazing projects at the IES Lighting Awards is always a highlight for Steensen Varming. This year, it was especially memorable, with all three of our nominated projects bringing home an award. For over 20 years, Steensen Varming has received recognition at these awards, and we hope to carry that legacy forward for years to come. Thank you and congratulations to everyone involved! At Steensen Varming, we had the pleasure of bringing light to a project that bridges Culture and Country at the New South Wales Parliament House. Collaborating with the @nswparliament , Dharawal and Yuin artist Alison Page, Culture and Heritage Consultant and Dharawal/Gumbaynggirr woman Rowena Welsh-Jarrett, ceramicist Simon Reece, Tilt Industrial Design, Entrenched Landscape and Design, and Star Electrical, we crafted the #lightingdesign for the newly unveiled Acknowledgement of Country sculpture. Unveiled on August 21st, this sculpture is more than just art; it’s a physical narrative that embodies the deep time history of the cultural landscape around Parliament House. Each visible layer is composed of natural elements – earth, stone, ochre, shell, and ash – that reveal their colours, imprints, and textures to the surface. The resulting bands celebrate features of the local landscape that are significant to its First Nations Custodians. Our lighting design was tailored to reveal the subtle textures and vibrant colours of these natural elements, ensuring that the stories of this stratified pillar shine through.

This latest design of Central Park in Sydney’s emerging Bradfield City Centre honours Country, while celebrating new and old knowledge and the practice of deep care. The two-hectare park at the heart of the new city centre will be the welcoming point for visitors as they arrive from Bradfield Metro Station. Contained by a forested edge with a layered canopy and rich understory planting, the park comprises two clearings. The first is a civic space for gatherings and events, while the second is a nurturing and protected space which frames Sky Country and demonstrates care for water, sky and earth. Between these spaces are play and shelter areas which have been inspired by and co-designed with Dharug weavers, foregrounding Dharug knowledge and culture. The competition winning scheme was designed by @aspectstudios in collaboration with architects @collinsandturner , cultural consultant and Baramadagal woman of the Dharug Nation Jayne Christian, curatorial collaborator Emily McDaniel from the Wiradjuri Nation, artist Janet Laurence, structural engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan and lighting designer @steensenvarming .  Other collaborators joined the team as the design developed.   The project has just been placed on State Significant Development Application exhibition by DPHI. We’re eager to share more of this crucial project as it takes shape.

In honour of NAIDOC Week, we are showcasing the beautiful art that is included in some of our projects around Australia. Swipe to explore. Picture 1: Warrick Lane Carpark The artwork on the columns works with the lighting and architecture to create a dynamic wayfinding that connects spaces and reflects the area’s history. Titled ‘Under the ground (earth)’, by Aboriginal artist Blak Douglas commissioned through Dadu Bamul, the artist has used images and language of a different animal, native to the area of Dharug Land, combined with colour to identify each level of the carpark. Picture 2: Taronga Zoo Indigenous artist Jake Nash designed the storytelling art on the walls of the Nocturnal House at the Taronga Zoo; the lighting design responds to Nash‘s storytelling, transitioning in colour and intensity. Picture 3: NGA The National Gallery holds the largest collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in the world. The 200 log coffins of The Aboriginal Memorial at the National Gallery of Australia commemorate the Indigenous people who have lost their lives defending their land since 1788. The fragile, natural pieces, created by 43 artists require a controlled, clean environment with stable temperature and humidity as well as controlled lighting conditions. #NAIDOCweek #NAIDOC2024 #IndigenousCulture
