In May I had the opportunity to operate Steadicam for the red carpet live broadcast for the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premiere. McAdams, Wong, Cumberbatch, and Hayley Atwell all walked by, which was pretty cool, but then Sir Patrick Stewart showed up. What you can't see is the director yelling into my ear over the comms "DON'T SHOW PATRICK WE CAN'T SHOW PATRICK" as I proceed to follow the beautiful bald head belonging to one of the greatest actors of all time. Amazingly, I found this candid photo circulating on Twitter later and got to have a little freakout in the privacy of my own home.
Life is good. Words can't express how thankful I am for everyone who helped me get to the point where I get to do things like this for work. ♥️

When I first pitched the idea to my team that I wanted to do a single take, especially as a first time director, there were concerns. It's a tricky shot to do both logistically and performatively. Luckily my producer @leftyproducer and my DP @ryanramsey helped me coordinate it 🙏🏽
I wanted the audience to be fully immersed with Amy in the stress and chaos of the scene. I rehearsed with the actors in a little park near my apartment all of the blocking, but on the day, I was still nervous. Thanks to the incredible performances of our actors and the great camera work by @steadidavid , we nailed it in one shot! We did a few more for safety, but I was so pleased.
Working with the music of @hua.hsuan and sound work of @lawrence_he , I wanted the feeling of anxiety and dread to build to its tipping point.

This was the view from the end of my block on Wednesday night. I was on a walk with @elianarobertsn taking pictures of the smokey sky when we noticed a fire breaking out in the hills that wasn't even on @watchdutyapp or the news yet. I snapped a few pics before going to get my big camera, and in those 10-15 minutes the fire had exploded in size and was still growing.
Within a few minutes of setting up with some neighbors on the corner to watch, we noticed water drops had begun to come by the dozens via helicopters scooping water out of the Hollywood Reservoir just a few hills over, and the effect was almost immediately noticeable. In the timelapse at the end, you can tell the perimeter on the left is basically halted once the drops start. That's just what we could see from three miles away--the right side of the screen had an entirely different front going on that they also got under control.
@losangelesfiredepartment , @lacountyfd , and many other first responders kept this thing from spreading both up and downhill into both a dense hillside neighborhood and a major population center, they deserve immense credit for preventing this from becoming a third major fire in the center of LA.
If the winds were stronger, if the reservoir was any further, or if anything else had gone wrong it could've easily kept spreading, forcing us and tens of thousands more to evacuate.
It's truly a unique terror seeing something like this so close to your home, and I'm beyond thankful we're all still safe here. A lot of other people aren't as lucky, and the communities here are still reeling while the other fires rage on.
