To get an idea on Japanese aesthetics we read "In praise of shadows", an essay written by Jun'ichiro Tanizaki in 1933 where he describes among other things how the absence of artificial light leads to real beauty.
We just stayed in a traditional house of about a century old where we experienced this at first hand.

Eager to discover the Japanese spirit, we visited the Hasui exhibition at the Sieboldhuis in Leiden. His landscapes have shaped the global image of Japan: serene, balanced and refined. The subtle colour palette, combined with abstract patterns representing rain and snow, blew our mind. Definitely an eye opener!

We use a secret language in our work, an alphabet of characters. While creating, we give it a specific meaning. Once completed, the meaning fades and our language becomes fluid. For us, language is a ritual act that does not need to be understood literally.
