Construction has begun on the new Ad Astra Pool for the City of Lenexa. Last month, City Council approved the final design and construction cost – a result of an extensive community and neighborhood engagement effort led by SFS Architecture in collaboration with Parks and Recreation staff. Ad Astra Park and Pool will be featuring the following amenities and improvements when it opens:
- New park restrooms, trail connections and a shelter replacement
- A zero-depth entry area with shade over the water
- 25-yard lap lanes for recreation lap swimming
- Deep-water area for diving
- 180-foot current channel
- Variety of shade structures throughout the deck and grass areas
- Bathhouse and concession building featuring a mass timber roof and solar renewable energy that will offset energy usage.
The new pool and park improvements are expected to be completed in May of 2026.

The City of Overland Park celebrated the rededication of Maple Hills Park in Overland Park this week.
SFS designed the new Maple Hills shelter and restroom buildings using cross-laminated timber panels and implemented passive sustainable design strategies. Using solar energy, this is the first City project to be entirely off the electric utility grid.
Other new features include a new playground with shade, pickleball courts, and a new parking lot with EV charging stations.
The project won an AIA Kansas City Design Excellence award last year.

The City of Overland Park, Kansas Government will break ground on Bietigheim-Bissingen Park this Friday, August 9.
SFS is leading the design team in the development of the new sister-city park, situated on approximately 6.5 acres at the northeast corner of 159th and Quivira Streets. Based on the outcome of a community and neighborhood engagement process to understand concerns and determine priority amenities, this new public park will include a shelter, restroom, playground, bocce ball court, reading nook, open lawn space, elevated boardwalk, gazebo, and a small parking lot.
The German architectural style, city planning, integration of art, and the relationship to the water that is prevalent in Bietigheim-Bissingen will have a strong influence in the design and layout of the park.
We are honored to be a part of this exciting new project for the City alongside our partners! Read more at the link in our bio.
Some of the STAND team volunteered this week with the Johnson County Christmas Bureau by helping hang wreaths and display trees for their Festival of Trees auction taking place this weekend. The Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville tree was a staff favorite.
