Staley-Wise Gallery continues our Instagram series of staff picks from the gallery’s roster of artists. Today's selection was chosen by the gallery’s archivist, (Thea) Yuxin Lin. This vintage collage includes 16 thumbnail-sized reproductions of the July, August, September, and October 1949 covers of Harper’s Bazaar and additional editorial images - all shot by Louise Dahl-Wolfe, who would eventually photograph more than 80 covers of the magazine. This collage, which includes the photographer’s notes and fashion credits, was one of many found in Dahl-Wolfe's archive of her career in fashion. Staley-Wise Gallery has represented the work of Louise Dahl-Wolfe since the gallery opened in 1981. #staleywisegallery #louisedahlwolfe #staffpicks #theaspick #harpersbazaar #covers #fashionphotography #1940s #collage #archive

This Louise Dahl-Wolfe photograph is part of designer Robert Stilin’s curated installation at the 2026 Design On A Dime Benefit in NYC tonight! The sold-out benefit brings together acclaimed designers’ vignettes of furnishings and art, all of which is for sale with the proceeds benefiting Housing Works. For more than three decades, Housing Works has been at the forefront of the movement to end AIDS and homelessness and fight for the rights and dignity of some of the most marginalized populations. Housing Works was founded in 1990 as the housing committee of ACT UP and is now a leading provider of housing and lifesaving services to low-income individuals affected by HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses, including LGBTQ+ youth, the transgender community, immigrants, people experiencing substance use, and formerly incarcerated New Yorkers. Housing Works' integrated healthcare, supportive housing portfolio, wraparound services, and relentless advocacy are supported by innovative social enterprise: nine Thrift Shops throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, its iconic Bookstore & Cafe in Soho, and most recently, New York's first adult-use dispensary. In the year ahead, amid challenging headwinds from the federal government, Housing Works continues to expand its services and fight for what is right for those who need our help the most, bridging communities in building a more compassionate and equitable world. Fashion editor Phyllis Posnick writes about her collaboration with Steven Klein: When set designers and prop stylists do their job well, the reader shouldn’t be aware that a location isn’t “real” or that the couch, table, mirror, bed hadn’t always been there. We weren’t able to shoot this picture in a real kitchen, because we planned to flood the room, so we needed to be in a studio with a drain in the floor. Anyone who’s ever renovated a kitchen knows how expensive they are to build. Our production designer, Mary Howard, searched for more than two weeks for the right components. The day before our shoot we still had no set because everything we needed to rent or buy was over our budget. Once again a last minute idea saved us. IKEA sells modular kitchens and they generously donated and delivered the cabinets and counters in a few hours. Mary designed it, tiled the walls, added the window, brought the table, toaster, pots, the remote, and everything you see except Karlie. Her crew began work at 5 A.M., assembled the pieces, hooked up the water so the sink was overflowing, and made it all look like a kitchen in someone’s home by 10 A.M. - Phyllis Posnick, from “Stoppers: Photographs from My Life at VOGUE” (Abrams, 2016) This photograph is included in Staley-Wise Gallery’s presentation at Booth B2 at the 2025 Photography Show (presented by AIPAD) at the Park Avenue Armory in New York and our exhibition "Helmut Newton x Steven Klein: on the dark side” is still available to see The fair runs through April 26 and the exhibition runs at the gallery through May 2 and we look forward to seeing you at both! While perhaps best known for his fashion and portrait photography which appeared extensively in publications such as VOGUE, still-lifes with nature were photographer Horst P. Horst’s creative “escape” throughout his life. Some of the photographs shown above were taken at Horst’s longtime home in Oyster Bay, New York and one was even shot in Virginia when Horst served a 3-month stint of U.S. Army service in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. These photographs are included in Staley-Wise Gallery’s presentation at Booth B2 at the 2025 Photography Show (presented by AIPAD) at the Park Avenue Armory in New York. While fashion photographs have often relied on frank or suggestive depictions of sexuality to excite viewers, choosing where to draw the line is still subject to debate. Helmut Newton’s photograph of Lisa Taylor, legs parted and devouring a shirtless male model with her gaze, appeared in a fashion editorial titled “The Story of O" in the May 1975 issue of American VOGUE. As Newton himself remembered, when the magazine appeared on the newsstands, “all hell broke loose,” and he supposedly delighted in how many readers cancelled their subscriptions. In 2008, American VOGUE commissioned Steven Klein to shoot an editorial at Karl Lagerfeld’s home in Paris but the photograph listed above, with the male model’s legs spread similarly to Taylor’s, was ultimately deemed too provocative for publication. Our current exhibition, “Helmut Newton x Steven Klein: On the Dark Side,” is on view through May 2nd. We look forward to seeing you here! Our upcoming exhibition, “Helmut Newton x Steven Klein: On the Dark Side,” opens on Thursday, March 19th, with a reception from 6 to 8 PM. Steven Klein was born in Rhode Island in 1965 and studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design before concentrating on photography in the 1990s in Paris, becoming one of the most provocative and influential image-makers of the contemporary era. In addition to creating advertising campaigns for the world’s leading brands, Klein’s work continues to be published in magazines such as VOGUE and Vanity Fair. He is particularly known for his photographic collaborations with designers and artists, including Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, Brad Pitt, and Madonna. His work has been exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Brooklyn Museum in New York, and is included in the permanent collections of institutions including the V&A Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London and the International Center of Photography in New York. His first monograph, “Steven Klein,” was published by Phaidon in 2022. Most of the images in this exhibition are also included in his newest book, “Steven Klein VOGUE,” which was published in 2025 by Abrams. We look forward to seeing you here! Our upcoming exhibition “Helmut Newton x Steven Klein: On the Dark Side” opens on Thursday, March 19th. Helmut Newton was born in Berlin in 1920 and from an early age was interested in photography, assisting the prominent photographer Yva. With the emergence of the Nazis, his Jewish family fled Germany in 1938. Newton eventually landed in Australia, where he began his life as a photographer, achieving success and ultimately moving to Paris with his wife, June. In addition to his many years of editorial photography, most notably in the French and American editions of VOGUE, Newton released several books of his work, beginning with “White Women” in 1976. His work continues to be exhibited worldwide and is included in the permanent collections of institutions, including the International Center of Photography in New York, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and most significantly, the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, which was founded shortly after his death in Los Angeles in 2004. We look forward to seeing you here!
