Pinch me! My book earned a Publishers Weekly starred review. Thank you to @publishersweekly for seeing Lucy’s story so deeply. Every book is its own wild child, and this one took plenty of wrestling and wrangling to tame, which makes this star feel extra-meaningful. #staceylee #heiressofnowhere #authoratsea
Thank you to the @lapubliclibrary and to all who joined me to chat about KILL HER TWICE at Asian Lit Joy, including my lovely assistant (MY MOM). Such a cool day of events celebrating #AAPIHM; I got to shed a few tears with @aimeephanwrites watching the short play AMY TRAN GOES TO WASHINGTON at the library’s Mark Taper auditorium, which I hope all you locals get a chance to see— it’s playing free of charge at LA libraries through this month brought to you by @eastwestplayers !
This Saturday, I’ll be at the @lapubliclibrary for the Asian Lit Joy festival talking about a book that is incredibly close to my heart. The events of KILL HER TWICE take place just down the street from the library in Old Chinatown — the neighborhood that once stood where Union Station is today.
Included here are some photos from the original launch (circa 2023), along with a research photo of me at Union Station in 2021 while I was walking the streets that inspired this story.
I hope you’ll join me on Saturday as we talk about the lost history of Old Chinatown, the real places behind the novel, and how I built this murder mystery from the ghosts of a vanished community.
I can’t wait to discuss Heiress of Nowhere with @staceyleeauthor on June 24th at 2:00 PM PT here on Instagram! 🥳 Heiress of Nowhere is a sweeping YA historical gothic mystery in which an orphan races to uncover a k!ller—who may have come from the sea—when she and her beloved orcas fall under suspicion. We hope you join us! 🫶🏼

Hard to believe, it’s been five years since this book was launched via Zoom during the pandemic. I am very grateful for the love LUCK OF THE TITANIC has received over the years, including a recent mention in the @nytimes . It’s so interesting to watch how a book lands with readers. The readers who loved this one always asked me who my favorite character was (Drummer).
As a twist on the old adage: show me what books you love, and I’ll tell you who you are.
You might know Andi Bartz for her outstanding work as named plaintiff in Bartz v. Anthropic, landmark 2025 class-action copyright lawsuit in which she and others accused AI company Anthropic of using pirated books (including mine) to train its “Claude” language model. Did you also know she does an amazing Substack on all things writing and publishing? It’s wonderful and informative!
I had the amazing fortune to plunk myself down next to her at dinner a few years ago at Shineaway, Reese Witherspoon’s annual conference spotlighting women and when the restaurant was slow to bring my dish after all other dishes had been brought, she hailed the server and made known we were waiting (in the politest way). Total class act.
I posted the link to my article in my stories, or you can find her substack here: /
Every spring I get a little obsessed with the @cornellbirdcams , witnessing what once was hidden and noticing how often bird life mirrors our own.
No one is surprised when bird imagery makes its way into my stories.
