A deep delve into beadwork // process video A later post of my second hand sewn beadwork that borrows techniques from Haitian Drapos yet with the twist of personal narration and 3d installation components to create quilted like tapestries that incorporate painting, hand sewn techniques, sculpture, assemblage and collage work. Personal anecdotes and familial representation are embedded in this work. Much of my work is around data and these flags represent more of the spirit element of storytelling found in Haitian culture. Like most of my work, it is slow and done by hand. I love the slowness that hand made crafts allows for. The imperfections, the repetition and healing elements. The work was started last summer and took a total of 4 months to complete. Its title pays homage to rich histories we carry within us that cannot be found in books but through internal ways of knowing. This work that has been shown at Grunt Gallery and Cranbrook Museum of Art is now part of a private collection. I look forward to more deep dives into beadwork in the near future.✹ More images are found on my site #stinabaudin #beadwork #drapo

· · · Stina Baudin is a Haitian-Canadian artist and scholar based in Montreal (QuĂ©bec) and Detroit (United States). Baudin’s weavings feature mixed media including data, text, archival materials and oral histories to tell stories about Black people and their contested histories. Paul Maheke lives and works in Montpellier (France). Across various forms and artistic disciplines, Maheke has sustained a long-term exploration into the ways that marginalized bodies, narratives and histories are made visible and invisible. Resisting a probing of identity that sits solely within the framework of identity politics, Maheke’s trajectory has continuously been channelled through spectral sensations. Born in Montreal (QuĂ©bec), eunice bĂ©lidor is a curator, writer, and researcher. Her curatorial practice focuses on epistolary writing as a medium for affective archiving within curatorial research.
