It’s time to announce some big Spore news – we will be ending our lease at our space on Matilija Street come end of July 🎭 We are so grateful to have been able to host shows and performances at the space over the last 2.5 years! As an artist-run project space, our ability to maintain open hours and host rotating programming has changed with our practices, and in reflection so is our approach to sustainable organizing. Spore itself will continue sans space in various shape-shifting forms this year. Look out for announcements from us about temporary exhibitions in Ojai and catch us at the next @offregistersb and @otherplacesartfair 🫡 We will miss hanging out with our community on Sunday mornings! Thank you to all our friends and friends of friends who joined us for openings and supported our events ❣️ To celebrate our last day in the space join us on Thursday night 7/31 at 6pm for an evening of performances with Bri Skellie, Jmy James Kidd, vera rodriguez, Robyn Nisbet, and Elizabeth Herring. ❣️ Kira, Rosemary, and Elizabeth

Join us this Sunday, July 20th, from 10 AM to 1 PM for the opening of Mattia Braccini’s solo exhibition 𝘘𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘻𝘺 ! 🐚 🪲 🦴 🪑 🏠 @mattiaceramics ——— Chairs sprout claws. Fossils press through walls. Houses hum with memory and bloom wings. In Mattia Braccini’s ceramic world, everyday objects shift into creatures, vessels, and dream fragments alive with memory, instinct, and metamorphosis. “The house shelters daydreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.” -Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space Here, clay becomes a keeper and house of dreams.

One way ashore, a thousand channels —Édouard Glissant, Poetics of Relation There was an isolation and loneliness to the scarecrows. You never see two together. They’re always alone, doing some important, solitary job for the person who made them. —PumpkinRot Elizabeth Herring created two scarecrows out of thrifted clothing and pantyhose, accompanied with a traveler’s journal for their fantasy vacation. The scarecrow’s “important solitary” job is in the eye of the beholder, as is the archivist’s time spent cataloguing. Why might we ingest, describe, and share single art objects with others? What can our ephemera tell us about our messy and contradictory lives? * Join us for the opening of A Scarecrow’s Archive, a joint project between artists Hailey Loman @lacarchive / @hai_hey and Elizabeth Herring @elizabethpostingstuff on Friday June 6th from 5-8pm. Spore Space will be hosting special open hours during the @ojaimusicfestival on Saturday and Sunday June 7th and 8th from 2-5pm.
