SOMETIMES, if she dresses up fancy enough, we let our girl out of the bar. Sometimes. All spiffed up in superhero couture for the @raeinfo ball last night. Thank you @sidreadshorror for remembering to take a photo! Also... patio's open 😘

May book club theme: Magic Realism. Every year we think that spring will never come, so when it does, it brings with it a renewed opportunity to believe in magic. Rooted in the everyday but tinged with wonder, these stories use subtle magic to blend everyday reality with the surreal to critique the hegemony or express emotional truths. Sound too niche? We also invite you to read a book that contains any kind of magic at all. The real magic of book club, after all, is in getting together and sharing ideas. May 27th 7:00 - 9:00 PM (Note, this is half an hour earlier than our usual start time)

Last night's book club was such a vibe. The theme was 'resistance', and the range of ideas was incredible. We talked about everything from the intersection of art and class, to food politics, Canadian identity, oligarchy, physics, astronomy and even the black death. We also heard about an inspired new project coming from our neighbour and all-around delightful person @medusabeth : a monthly banned book subscription service called @litresistance . They're launching tomorrow, so be sure to go and give them a follow so you can sign up! @medusabeth @levi.fbaum @sherry.lais @_franciful_ @andrewcpaul

Why do we change the menu so often at Spilt? Because we’re more interested in pushing creativity and innovation forward in the sober space than we are in replicating the traditional cocktail model. We are a learning bar, and a teaching bar. There’s always something new happening and things move fast here (as fast as the seasons). There is an infinite number of flavour possibilities out there, especially heading into garden season, and we can’t wait to share what we discover with you. Stay tuned for some new drinks being rotated into our tasting menu this month! @chronicnostalgic @andrewcpaul @stephanie.n.p

From the dessert menu: the O-day’min Roffignac 🍓 Named after the city ward that Spilt is located in, O-day’min means ‘strawberry’ or ‘heart berry’ in Anishinaabe. This riff on a classic is deep, sweet, tart and rich with underlying caramel tones and a hint of herbaceous basil. Only available for another couple weeks, come try one while you can! @edmonton_anne @soberspirits

This month’s book club theme: resistance. Resistance is a force that shapes both individuals and societies—whether it’s quiet defiance, bold rebellion, or the inner struggle to stay true to oneself. This month, our book club explores stories of characters and thinkers who challenge expectations, confront injustice, and push back against forces that seek to control or silence them. Across genres and perspectives, we’ll consider what it means to resist—and what it costs. Here are a few examples in our TBR piles: 📕 ‘On Tyranny’ by Timothy Snyder — a powerful call to resist authoritarianism 📕 ‘How to Lose a Country’ by Ece Temelkuran — a warning about democratic erosion and how to safeguard it 📕 ‘A Confederacy of Dunces’ by John Kennedy Toole — social critique delivered through satire 📕 ‘What You Have Heard Is True’ by Carolyn Forché — a deeply personal memoir of witnessing and resisting injustice 📕 ‘Rest Is Resistance’ by Tricia Hersey — reclaiming rest as a form of resistance against grind culture and systemic oppression 📕 ‘Elbows Up! Voices of Canadian Resilience and Resistance’ edited by Elamin Abdelmahmoud — a rallying cry for unity in the face of intimidation and division 📕 ‘All the Light We Cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr — a poignant portrayal of war and quiet resistance in occupied France Or, if you’re not in the mood for heavy political fare, we invite you to resist our theme by choosing something completely different 😂 Either way, we can’t wait to hear about what you’re reading! Next book club: April 29th Spilt Zero Proof 7:30-9:30

From the dessert menu: the Glasshopper Based on the grasshopper cocktail, this milk punch brings a new level of freshness to a classic. Made with home-grown garden mint tea from @belke_gardens , cardamom, mint syrup, white chocolate syrup and a blend of milk and cream, the mix is then gently split with lemon juice and filtered, transforming it into a refined, velvety-clear drink. Reminiscent of a Smooth and Melty mint chocolate button, the result is bright, nostalgic and luxe. Come try one tonight!
