We're frequently asked about different astronomy filters and how they affect nightscape images. Here's a set of images using different combinations of the most common filters and the results.
All images were captured using a Visible + H-Alpha Astromodified Canon EOS R5 Mark II and a Sigma Art 14mm f:1.8 lens. Camera, Lens, and filters were provided by Spencer's Camera and Photo. The foreground was captured using the Visible + H-Alpha modified camera with no filters. The sky portion was captured using various filter combinations to show the effect of each filter. All sky images were tracked using a Benro Polaris. Image processing was performed using Adobe Photoshop and PixInsight.
Please email us or refer to our website with any questions regarding available filters and practices for your specific gear.

Starlight highway 💫
Some places just hit different at night 🙌🏽
On a recent mission with the bro @shadowandshadenz would be rude not to stop at the starlight highway sign and kill the engine… nothing but silence, cold air, and a sky doing its thing overhead.
No rush, no noise… just stood there taking it in while the stars slowly took over.
Haven’t explored much around this area and look forward to getting back there soon 📸

New Zealand Night Skies
Finishing up a Bolivia tour, getting a bug off the Santiago - Auckland flight, then a huge run of clear night skies, whilst also constantly moving accommodation on the drive down from Auckland to Queenstown (though still not reached Queenstown) has been tough, age is definitely catching up.
But it’s left no time for editing so I quickly put this together this morning, needs cleaning and this was the 2nd attempt, 2 nights on the bounce as I messed up the first night; I also left this camera here and another about 20km away whilst going to a 3rd location and working camera 3! Not sure I’ll ever get everything edited from this South America & NZ trip.

Dreaming of the stars…..
At the @nightscaperconference in Farmington, NM. Can’t wait to shoot the night skies here. Meanwhile, here’s a recap of what I captured in @archesnps in March with @spencerscamera .
It was wonderful running into @roycebairphoto at the conference and seeing many familiar faces form the @nightphotosummit
Shot as always with my @canonusa EOSR8 using @sigmaphoto 14mm f1.8 lens

What a night! 🔥
Quite a bit of planning went into this timelapse of the Milky Way rising over one of my favourite lakes. I dusted off and charged the old Syrp pan/tilt setup and started doing calculations to manually track the core across the sky.
My original location didn’t work out, so I headed here for plan B. The weather models were all over the place with drastically different readings, but I risked the tank of gas and went for it anyway.
In the end it was a success. I managed around 900 shots over almost 4 hours before the new Canon battery finally died, which impressed me considering it was close to 0°C.

Last night was incredibly still with crystal clear skies under the Milky Way, so I made the most of it and revisited a few spots I hadn’t been to in a while ✨
Here's a timelapse of the Galactic Core rising.
