Discover the inaugural edition of Independent 20th Century (@independent_hq ), which is taking place September 8-11, 2022 at the Battery Maritime Building at Cipriani South Street in NYC. Independent 20th Century features 32 galleries with over 70 artists, 22 solo and duo artist presentations and special projects. The fair “focuses on artists who made a significant contribution to art history between the years 1900 and 2000, yet who were uncelebrated in their day. These artists are now being championed by a generation of gallerists who are reassessing the canon to make it more inclusive and representative of our times.” Independent’s aim is to be a reflection of the global art world. Concurrent to the in person fair is a digital presentation available online through September 30th. Pictured are some of the works featured at the fair. Currently on view as part of @independent_hq is a booth by @specificobject in collaboration with @susaninglettgallery 📰 David Platzker is Specific Object and showing an array of rare art world gems. These include an original ‘wanted’ ad placed by Dan Graham, a few of Yayoi Kusama’s original porn newspapers published in the late 60s (who knew?! 🔴⚪️), and an incredible early project by Adrian Piper that was sent out as a mailer to everyone on early gallerist Seth Siegelaub’s list —the work focused on variations of graph paper…a diy exhibition of sorts. The booth contains a myriad of other bits of ephemera, and if you are lucky, Platzker might share some of his astounding stories adding additional layers of intrigue to many artists we already know. ✔️
It’s a must see! Independent new edition focuses on art of the 20th Century and is on view tomorrow 12-6PM at 10 South Street.
Lucky me..on the day of my visit to the fair, @specificobject was wearing an @ostroynyc resort shirt 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚴🏼♀️🚴🏼🚴🏾♂️🚲🚲🚲🚲

Photo op! David Platzker from @specificobject with the OG editor of Warhol’s “Interview magazine” Bob Colacello (@bobcolacello ) at the #Independent20c. And yes that is a Warhol in the background/ "Cow Poster," published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France, December 16, 1970 - January 14, 1971. This copy was printed without text, pretty special.

This image shows the "A.W.C. : Open Hearing / An Open Public Hearing on the Subject : What Should be the Program of the Art Workers Regarding Museum Reform and to Establish the Program of an Open Art Workers Coalition [AWC]," a report created by the Art Workers Coalition on April 10, 1969 in order to bring each artists' opinion on museum reform to the attention of all art workers and all art institutions in New York City and elsewhere.
This work will be part of our booth at the #Independent20c alongside other objects from the collection of @specificobject .

Specific Object in collaboration with Susan Inglett Gallery will be at the Independent 20th Century next week from 8-11 September!
Link in bio to view our Online Viewing Room.
Our presentation—“I Can’t See How I Can Be Outside Of The Society — So I’m Within It”—will explore the art and socio-political tumult of 1968 to 1970 through artists’ publications, editions, ephemera, and printed matter dating from these three years drawn from the holdings of Specific Object.
Rather than any singular narrative of events, the display will offer an annotated view of a revolutionary moment. The burgeoning anti-war and pro-choice protest movements will be present alongside less militant artistic concerns.
Works will include the radical museum campaigns of the Art Workers’ Coalition, Seth Siegelaub’s anti-gallery publications, Yayoi Kusama's “Orgy”—a tabloid that extended the artist’s naked happenings to audiences unable to attend her performances, Ed Ruscha’s “Stains,” among other works.

Happy #worldphotographyday.
Today we’re sharing a little sneak peek of the work included in the #Independent20c!
This double-page spread features a photograph taken by Bob Sabin of Yayoi Kusama painting large polka dots on the bodies of four naked men and a single woman in front of and mounting the Alice in Wonderland statue in Central Park, first published in Al Goldstein's adult-type magazine "Screw." Goldstein’s rationale for including the image was multifaceted: images of other Kusama events had already appeared in other periodicals. They allowed for journalists to cover stories of orgies, “kooky” loft parties, and staged art events, clothed and otherwise, at the Statue of Liberty, on Wall Street, and elsewhere around the island of Manhattan. They made life in the city appear fun and full of odd opportunities to be a part of it all.
Wishing everyone a happy and wild weekend!

Image: YAYOI KUSAMA, "Central Park. “You’re late,” said the Rabbit as he scratched his balls. The Mad Hatter was one up on the group though and he placed a well-laid screw on the mouses’s tail. “Gotcha by the tail” wallowed the Hatter as Alice kicked him on the nut." Screw, No. 1, (November 29, 1968)
