Last week on NYE, we opened a brand new production of Aida. I didn't really post much about it because it was profound for me, and I've never been good at posting about profound things in the moment. So, here's a little storytime if you're interested.
.
This is one of those moments that feels like the culmination of lots of separate events in my life that all connected at the right time and place:
.
My inexplicable interest in ancient Egypt, performing multiple shows that take place in ancient Egypt (dating all the way back to elementary school, and spanning multiple continents), Aida being the first opera I saw in high school, seeing Michael Mayer's first national tour of Angels in America in '95 (both parts twice, which I still look back on to this day and reference as a big pivotal and influential theatrical moment in my life, note the flying angel), double-majoring in acting etc and ancient history (with a focus on Egypt), joining many seasons of the former Met production of Aida....
.
I'm now gifted with the opportunity of originating a prominent role in a premier production, portraying an eminent real-life archeologist, revisiting and delving into new research I adore, in an opera I love, at a theater I revere, with a director I'm honored to work with, AND I get to fly.
.
It's difficult sometimes trying to explain what actors do at this opera house, how varied our work is, and how profound some of these roles can be for us. This is a great example of the amazing opportunities and visibility we're given, despite never singing a note. What a joy, honor, thrill, etc, etc, etc, it's been to work on this show. And come see us! We're here on-and-off till May.
