This wahoo almost tore a slip tip straight through its body trying to get away from the sharks on this spot. Most of the time, when wahoo run straight horizontal and drag the floats far away from where we’re diving, they can stay away from the sharks and we can land them before we have any shark problems. But sometimes, we shoot a wahoo and it swims straight DOWN. That’s what this one did, burying my float right away and digging down the entire fight. When this happens, the wahoo dies from exhaustion at depth, and we have to pull up a heavy fish all the way from depth without it getting sharked. This time, one of the sharks got a peice of it, we’re lucky he was a little guy and didn’t take more.
This was a delicious wahoo enjoyed by the whole crew! We ate some on the boat out of the shark bite since I brought soy sauce and wasabi for this trip.
