Where history is reclaimed and new generations find their voice.
This exhibition centers the visionary work of Judith F. Baca and the creation of The Great Wall of Los Angeles—a powerful example of art as a tool to educate, empower, and mobilize.
Developed through Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC), the mural brought together hundreds of youth, artists, and historians to uplift stories often left out of dominant narratives.
Experience original materials, ongoing sketches, and an audio component featuring Baca’s own reflections—inviting you to engage more deeply with the work and its impact.

What happens when three powerful art forms come together to tell one story?
This post highlights the visionary artists and cultural leaders who made this extraordinary collaboration possible.
Inspired by the legacy of the Great Wall of Los Angeles—the monumental mural created by Judith F. Baca—this program brought together visual art, orchestral music, and film in one performance, expanding how audiences can experience the stories held within the mural.
Presented at Walt Disney Concert Hall by the @laphil , the evening was made possible through the collaboration of conductor Gustavo Dudamel, filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and composer/curator Gabriela Ortiz—artists whose work across disciplines helped transform the mural’s visual history into an immersive musical and cinematic experience.
Together, their vision demonstrates the power of collaboration across art forms, bringing new life and new audiences to the stories that the Great Wall continues to tell. 🎨🎶🎬
Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes moments from the event and the creative process that brought this collaboration to life.

Happy Earth Day 🌎 🌱✨ We're celebrating more than just green spaces today, we are celebrating growth, opportunity and community!
With the help and leadership by @safeplaceforyouth , this garden right outside of SPARC's doors helps provide fresh food, hands-on learning and meaningful opportunities for youth with the goal of creating a sustainable food system for unhoused youth in West LA 🦋
This garden also hosts California native flowers, currently in bloom, inviting our important pollinator bumble-bees friends to come and visit 🐝🌼

SPARC is especially proud to share that the 1994 Lithograph of Judy Baca's "Chavez Ravine and the Red Scare," detail from the 1950s segment of the Great Wall of Los Angeles, is included in this exhibition. We are beyond excited to be featured among such powerful Chicana/o/e artists.
Presented by the Secretary of Culture and INBAL, this major exhibition of contemporary Chicano Art brings together over 70 works by multiple generations of artists of Mexican and Latin American descent, primarily based in Los Angeles. featuring collectives like ASCO and @3bcollective alongside more than 30 artists, the show traces powerful cultural narratives across time and space.

Public art in Los Angeles is a living archive of resistance, survival, and presence. In a city with the largest urban Indigenous population, our stories continue to be written on walls, in movement, and through community.
Last month, @canativevote and The Chapter House gathered alongside @sparcinla , @jeffreydeitchgallery , and @janaunplgd to honor the legacy of Native activism represented in The Great Wall of Los Angeles. From the Occupation of Alcatraz to the ongoing work of the American Indian Movement, we reflected on how public art holds our histories, on and off our homelands.
This is about the movement and how visibility is fought for. Our art tells the truth of our existence.
Ahéhee’ / thank you to everyone who showed up, listened deeply, and continues to carry this work forward. ✨

✨ Grateful for such a meaningful evening in community
Presented by the California Native Vote Project (@canativevote ) and The Chapter House (@thechapterhousela ), in partnership with @sparcinla and @jeffreydeitchgallery , this panel centered Native Art, Power, and Movement, and was held in front of the “Why Alcatraz Matters” and “Wounded Knee” details from The 1970s: A Decade of Defiance and Dreams, part of The Great Wall of Los Angeles by Judith F. Baca—grounding the conversation in history, resistance, and continued cultural presence.
A huge thank you to our incredible panelists—Kris “urban rezlife” Longoria, an artist, writer, and mother serving as Lead Exhibit Advisor for The Occupation of Alcatraz; River Garza, an LA-based artist whose work draws from traditional Indigenous aesthetics; and Monica Zavala, a multidisciplinary artist working across muralism, illustration, painting, sculpture, writing, and digital art.
Special thanks to moderator Jana Schmieding—comedian, actor, and podcaster known for her work on Rez Dogs—for guiding the conversation with care, insight, and humor.
Thank you to everyone who showed up and held space with us ✨

In the Great Wall of Los Angeles, The 1970s: A Decade of Defiance and Dreams, Judith F. Baca paints a segment titled “Roe v.Wade” highlighting breakthroughs for women's liberation and reproductive justice in the 1970s.
Such legal breakthroughs include Roe V. Wade (1973) which established a constitutional right to abortion. In June 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned with Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization abandoning 50 years of precedent, prompting dozens of states to ban abortion outright, and endangering the lives of countless women and gender-expansive people across the nation.
Coined by SisterSong in 1994, "reproductive justice” is defined as the belief of the human right to bodily autonomy, the right to have children, the right not to have children, and the right to parent in safe communities.
Using a transgender lens, reproductive justice also requires dismantling the gender binary in healthcare, access to contraception, gender-affirming care, eliminating forced sterilization and addressing intersecting oppressions.
The struggle for reproductive justice and bodily autonomy continues…
You can see more of the ‘Roe V. Wade’ segment in the 1970s: A Decade of Defiance and Dreams for only a few more days on view at the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery at 925 N Orange Dr, until April 4, 2026. #judybaca #greatwalloflosangeles #jeffreydeitchgallery #roevwade #reproductivejustice
