For generations, our people have fought to be seen, heard, and respected. Today, we carry that forward through our lived experiences, our stories, and our vote.
Voting is one of the ways we exercise our collective power and protect the future of our communities. It’s how we uphold our self-determination, protect our people and lands, and have a say in the decisions that shape our lives – from education systems and healthcare access, to housing stability and resource allocation to our communities.
This election, we raise our voices together.

The California Native Vote Project (CNVP) condemns last week’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, where the Supreme Court essentially nullified Section 2 of the VRA, making it difficult to challenge map dilution and racial discrimination.
The decision narrows tools long used to challenge voting maps that dilute the political power of communities of color, and places American Indian/Alaska Native, Black, Latino/e and other historically excluded communities at greater risk of disenfranchisement in elections for Congress, state legislatures and local government.
For Native peoples, the consequences run deep. Native communities have faced generations of exclusion from the ballot box through voter suppression, vote dilution, packing, splitting and other systemic barriers. The Voting Rights Act has been one of the most important legal tools Native communities have used to challenge that discrimination — including landmark cases in Alaska, Arizona, Montana, the Dakotas, and beyond. While Native organizers have won meaningful progress, this decision threatens to roll back the very protections that made those wins possible.
CNVP believes representation does not happen by accident. It requires laws, accountability and community participation. The decision underscores the urgency of CNVP's mission to build Native political power across California through voter engagement, leadership development, policy advocacy, research, and organizing on education, health, housing and other community priorities.

Missing and Murdered Indigenous People’s Week (MMIP), and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives Day May 5 (MMIWR), is a time to honor the lives of our Native relatives who should still be with us, and to confront the systems that have allowed this crisis to persist for generations.
As AI/AN and Indigenous people, we face disproportionate rates of violence, disappearance, and murder, often with little accountability or media attention. This is not just a statistic; it is a reflection of ongoing injustice tied to settler violence, jurisdictional gaps, underinvestment, and the erasure of our Native communities.
At the California Native Vote Project, we believe visibility must lead to action. Advocacy, civic engagement, and community power are critical to ensuring our Native voices are heard and protected.
Join us tomorrow in 📍Sacramento, CA on May 6 – from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. – for the Annual Candlelight Vigil for Missing & Murdered Indigenous People at the State Capitol West Steps; as we stand alongside community leaders and partners to uplift Native voices and push for policies that protect and serve our communities.

📢 We are calling on American Indian and Alaska Native community members to join a day of action— 🚫 no work, no shopping, and no school. We’ll gather tomorrow at ⏰10:00 a.m. on 🗓️ Friday, May 1 at 📍Southside Park, on Miwok and Nisenan land (Sacramento), to walk together in the march.
For our communities, this day is more than a strike. It’s a reminder that the systems we are asked to step away from were built on our lands and through the labor of our people.
We continue to show up for one another—holding our communities, our cultures, and our responsibilities to the land. May Day is a chance to be visible, to stand together, and to move in unity. We are still here. We are still organizing. And we are still fighting for our future.
