The North Pole Expedition by Spacegroup. 5 projects in the last 5 years over the Arctic Circle. Perception; First, mid-winter, we experienced the shifting landscape of the north. An omnipresent black shadow formed a mysterious backdrop, east. Returning in summer, the wall had been moved, replaced by other perceptions, other depths, shifting layers, as one changes the aperture on a reflex camera. The time space relationships are in a constant state of flux, managed by light. Perception Field; Surrounded by see, and islands and horizons. Physical connections, shifting perceptions, dispose of any traditional notion of edge, a spatiality where water, view, sky, light, land form changing truths. Interventions that unfold possibilities through events and where each situation is inscribed with the possibility of another. Architecture as an intermediary platform that reveals the natural condition of a territory. To operate as an inversion mechanism for asymmetries and ruptures of ecological environmental or cultural order. "Both installation of the prefabricated CLT panels and subsequent works are easier, quieter and safer, reducing or completely avoiding wet trades and reducing the number of personnel required to erect the superstructure by around 50-70%. While timber should rarely be used for below ground works, the weight of a CLT structure can significantly reduce the requirement for foundations, resulting in an overall reduction in the volume of concrete used for the ground works as compared to a traditional build. The program savings that can be achieved using CLT are generally considered the most significant benefit and biggest cost saving associated with this system of construction. Typically, the overall construction of a CLT scheme will be 20% faster than an equivalent scheme in reinforced concrete. Reduction in program time has financial benefits in reducing on-site overheads, shortening loan terms, personnel costs and allowing for the earlier occupation of buildings. The reduced program offered by CLT can also enable time critical projects to be realized." (Text: Waugh Thistleton Architects "100 projects UK CLT") Project List: Ny OsloS (Approved+Rejected&Discarded), Ruten (Built), Onfill Industrigata Office (Proposal), Oslo FireStation (Entry Competition). #Difk_as #Moelven #cltbuilding #circulareconomy #buildingwithwood #timberarchitecture

SpaceGroup and ASH has won the competition to design the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance in Paphos, Cyprus. Our concept starts with the entry garden in the existing building. This starts the sequence of inside/outside spaces. The compound idea brings the two buildings together, and does the stepping to the north to keep them in proportion to one another. The inner courtyard is the heart of the complex, through which all the main movements in the space are branched, both between the two buildings and between the streets "Μαρίας Συγκλητικής" and "Ανδρεα Χαραλαμπίδη". Its design is based on the Mediterranean, traditional, inner courtyard, which is an integral part of the neoclassical houses of Cyprus, where in this particular case, it takes on the role of open space reception. The well-known Cypriot wall is raised around the perimeter, reflecting the tradition of continuous construction in the area. As a synthetic element, it aims to create a sensible boundary between the complex, the public road and the neighboring buildings. This results in an internal "cryptic garden" in which the visitor can be isolated, isolated from the city noise. The local vegetation (elies, hyacinths and other Mediterranean plants) in combination with the materials of low thermal capacity (compacted soil for flooring) as well as the wet element (σιντριβάνι – φεγγίτης φεγγίτης φυγογείου προγκή προστέρων), create the appropriate microclimate and the right conditions for thermal comfort for the operation of an outdoor space, under the weather conditions of Cyprus. @asharchitecture.cy @voxel_pixel #paphos #architecture #design #architecturecompetition #cyprus

Recreational Landscapes is concerned with the creation of new strategies and ideas for future potential occupations of the Norwegian Landscape, seeking for innovative and environmental committed approaches for the development of new concepts for destinations, beyond the conventional and usual programs that form the basis for most recreational combined programs. If on one side Norway has the potential to become an international recreational destination, this possibility stands in opposition to the high prices practiced in the country, which are in average 38 percent higher than those in the 25 European countries members of the European Union. The antagonism between these two tendencies, call for alternative models for ‘experience travelling’ able to take advantage of the country’s environmental and cultural conditions, and operating on the development of strategies for a specific audience target while addressing environmental and sustainable concerns. @mygarybates #sustainability #cabin #hytte #architecture #arkitektur #visitnorway #design #scandinaviandesign #publicspace #spacegroup

Havneparken is a completely new district with a unique set of qualities that can’t be found anywhere else in Sandnes. The new housing building on the pier offers large waterfront views complemented with a more intimate and car-free urban space with streets and parks, just a stone’s throw away from Langgata and the region's largest public transport hub and city park at Ruten. The district is planned as a "complete" neighborhood with both housing, commercial spaces, services and office spaces. The district will have its own bus stop in Jernbaneveien and the buildings are designed in a way that allows as many people as possible to take advantage of sea views. Building heights are carefully adapted to avoid shadows from neighboring buildings and ensure as much sun as possible on the public and private outdoor spaces. In the same way that the city plan facilitates for a variety of activities and experiences, 74 housing units are planned in the first construction phase. The architecture is a result of as many apartments as possible getting both panoramic views and a terraces facing the sea and filtering light into a sheltered balcony with orientation to the southwest. This is solved by the apartments being oriented approx. 45 degrees to the north-south axis and thanks to the stepping down of the building in all four directions. The building is bounded by four different outdoor spaces. To the south, a generous park area will be established, to the east there will be a harbor promenade and the opportunity to sit by the water's edge. To the north, the building borders the district square and to the west, the Sports Square will be established, where training activities will be arranged. In the extension of Sports Square, a generous stairwell leads up to a planted common outdoor area on level 2. This will be the building's main access and provides the opportunity for social interaction between the residents. In 2019, Spacegroup has been engaged by the Holmestrand municipality to study the development opportunities for the Hakan/Krana area in central Holmestrand. The feasibility study is the result of a broad involvement of the actors working in the area today, and the inhabitants of Holmestrand. Everyone agrees that the area has a significantly greater potential for the city than how it is used today, and through the process have made many proposals for a change in use of the harbour area. The proposals focus on freeing up larger areas for recreation to facilitate activities that enable residents and visitors to use the area as an attraction destination in the city. The purpose of the Feasibility Study has been to identify dependencies between the actors operating in the area today, make the resources in the area visible and what values can contribute to securing future-oriented decisions for the area. Eventually making accessible larger parts of Langøya for public traffic, this area will become a new resource for Holmestrand with great recreational and commercial value. The goal is for Hakan / Krana to become an integral part of Holmestrand city center, and a year-round destination that integrates the city with the sea for the benefit of those who work, live and visit Holmestrand. Experiences from other cities indicates that it is a great advantage that the municipality remains a landowner and rents out the land resources for desired purposes. A good urban planning strategy is the fastest and most affordable way to a low-emission society based on proven principles of mix of functions and proximity for daily life activities without pushing the problem onto future generations and seeking for technological innovation to solve it. #urbanplanning #placemaking #sustainablecity #sustainability #architecture #cityplanning #publicspace #socialequity #spacegroup

Completed in 2016, Hammerbakken House is a mediation between the highly particular needs of a handicapped child and the domestic needs of a family. A low-budget private residence, the client requested ’quantity over quality’ in order to maximize the child’s usable space and on-site experiences. The residence is elevated to allow direct car access to the entrance and lift. Above, a sequence of volumes folds around a private garden. A pool completes the loop. Prefabricated concrete was chosen for its robust and durable qualities, and detailing was kept to a minimum. The residence is extremely open, with large common spaces oriented to capture a rich variety of views, but also offers the possibility to withdraw into individual enclosures, acknowledging the need for privacy. The future waterfront is envisioned as an agglomeration of activity nodes that attract people along the coastal strip. Developed overtime along the 15 km shoreline, the first phases of the renovation will focus on the 3kms of the Old boulevard. The first step will establish the base of new relations between the public and the waterfront with sets of interventions involving a variety of local and institutional actors. The interventions will be infrastructural, social, landscape-oriented, cultural, and educational. The addition of new programs such as open-air cinema, a stage, a gallery, a library and public art along the waterfront will reinforce its position as a central cultural, social and touristic destination in Baku.
