One month (and a couple days) since Deffjam and we’re still swimming in the thick bubbling swamp of love and joy that flooded Thalia Hall on January 3rd!!! It was an unforgettable night of tears and laughter, old friends embracing, new friends shaking hands, beautiful music, moving displays, interactive crafts and so much more. It felt like a light that was dimmed for some time was reignited, illuminating with a familiar glow the intricate and beautiful web Ryan spun connecting everyone in the room together. It was 100% pure uncut gator. The feeling of playing Ryan’s songs again was indescribable. We missed them a whole lot. It meant the world to us to see so many people singing along, dancing, hooting and hollering, swaying and smiling. We were nourished by the amazing energy flowing from everyone in the crowd! A magnificent panoply of special guest performers blessed us with their gifts, and sherpaed us to the mountaintop. Hand in hand we overlooked a blazing sunset that faded into a panorama of jeweled stars, cosmic orbs, pluming nebulas, a billion shimmering mysteries. No one need strain to find Ryan among them- his stardust rests at equilibrium in all celestial bodies. Thank you to everyone who came or donated from afar to the @esschicago scholarships that have been set up in Ryan’s name. His spirit lives on in so many ways, but the promise of giving young folks the opportunity to explore their creativity in his name is especially meaningful. Keep your eyes peeled for updates from @deffjam2026 on that front! Thank you thank you to everyone again. The night will feature dynamic sets from Space Gators & Faux Furrs as they welcome special guests Sima Cunningham (Finom), V.V. Lightbody, Ratboys (duo), Andrew Sa, Kathy Patino (Girl K), Engine Summer, Lainey Strange, Rory Papania (Little Miami), Derek Weber (Head), Chris Devlin (Trinity Irish Dance Company), & Spencer Oullette (REZN). This communal extravaganza will feature an array of art installations to be displayed throughout the evening. Time will be dedicated to catching up with and embracing loved ones, accompanied by live instrumental music from Mich Shirey & The Nightwatch. With roots in Dayton, OH, branching off to Chicago, and a DIY attitude - Ryan Deffet kicked off DeffJam in 2016. This year’s rendition of DeffJam carries this energy forward as friends take the stage and come together from all over - celebrating his life and everlasting impact. Proceeds will go towards the Ryan Deffet Studio Grant and the Ryan Deffet Engineer Apprenticeship Award at Experimental Sound Studio (ESS). Experimental Sound Studio is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to artistic evolution and the creative exploration of sound. As an international hub for sonic experimentation, ESS nurtures artists, heralds new works, and builds a broad, supportive community of makers, enthusiasts, and creative partners through production, presentation, education, and preservation.
