This Friday night, May 22, we’re screening 𝙀𝙧𝙪𝙥𝙘𝙟𝙖, the screen debut of 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙡𝙞 𝙓𝘾𝙓, with 𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙈𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝙅𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙮 𝙊. 𝙃𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙨 and 𝙇𝙚𝙣𝙖 𝙂ó𝙧𝙖. “It’s a deceptively slight, engagingly effervescent, and sneakily profound study of desire, self-deception, and the mysteries of synchronicity.” - Peter Keough, Arts Fuse “Relieved of the burden of making a “Charli XCX movie,” [Charli XCX] shows a range here that hints at more versatility than you might expect… Still, 𝙀𝙧𝙪𝙥𝙘𝙟𝙖 knows what it’s working with, and how to tap into something bigger than itself.” - David Fear, Rolling Stone “Director Pete sosh juxtaposes the quiet nature of the narrative with a straightforward narration that gives the film a novelistic quality.” - Jourdain Searles “Anyone who has seen Charli XCX on stage knows her charisma could be used for so much more.” - Drew Gregory, Autostraddle May 22 • Fri 7 pm, doors at 6:30 𝙀𝙧𝙪𝙥𝙘𝙟𝙖 🎞️ dir. Telling you this: 𝙋𝙤𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨, the musical alias of New York synth-centric indie singer/songwriter Aaron Maine, comes to SPACE on June 21. Tickets are on sale now at SPACE538.ORG. Porches’ new release, a 4-track recorded mixtape titled 𝘔𝘈𝘚𝘒, is freshly dropped today. Rawly compiled with front-facing imperfections, it is a high-caliber burner and very fine follow-up to 2024’s angsty fantasy confessional 𝘚𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘵. June 21 • Sun 8 pm, doors at 7:30 @porches_hiii $22 advance. $25 day of show • $2 off for SPACE members #portlandmaine

Stoked to report that Philadelphia-based psych/punk/alternative trio 𝙎𝙋𝙄𝙍𝙄𝙏 𝙊𝙁 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘽𝙀𝙀𝙃𝙄𝙑𝙀 returns to SPACE for the first time in nearly a decade. The band is still cruisin' on their 2024 record 𝘠𝘖𝘜'𝘓𝘓 𝘏𝘈𝘝𝘌 𝘛𝘖 𝘓𝘖𝘚𝘌 𝘚𝘖𝘔𝘌𝘛𝘏𝘐𝘕𝘎, and understandably so (it rips). Tickets are on sale now at SPACE538.ORG. For the past decade, 𝙎𝙋𝙄𝙍𝙄𝙏 𝙊𝙁 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝘽𝙀𝙀𝙃𝙄𝙑𝙀 have honed an aesthetic like no other. They’ve chopped up samples, chewed them up, spit them back out again, baby birded it. Across four albums and a smattering of EPs, Zack Schwartz, Corey Wichlin, and Rivka Ravede have fully solidified their stance as some of rock’s weirdest and best deconstructionists. 2018’s Hypnic Jerk was a study in noise punk sampledelia. It was a breakthrough for the band. Frank Ocean became a fan, spinning “fell asleep with a vision,” on Blonded Radio. 2021’s 𝘌𝘕𝘛𝘌𝘙𝘛𝘈𝘐𝘕𝘔𝘌𝘕𝘛, 𝘋𝘌𝘈𝘛𝘏 was nasty dream pop by way of K-Mart realism and hitting the channel search setting on an old TV set. Their last release, 2023’s 𝘪'𝘮 𝘴𝘰 𝘭𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘺, explored the breakup between Schwartz and Ravede, setting the stage and emotional territory for the band’s fifth record, 𝘠𝘖𝘜'𝘓𝘓 𝘏𝘈𝘝𝘌 𝘛𝘖 𝘓𝘖𝘚𝘌 𝘚𝘖𝘔𝘌𝘛𝘏𝘐𝘕𝘎. This latest offering is the most crystallized version of the band’s aesthetic, a continued meditation on the end of relationships and the unsteadiness that follows. It is a meticulous, beautiful, and quietly heartbreaking collection of songs. More often than not, it sounds like listening to a walkman from inside of a hurricane, like the YouTube videos you’d watch in bed for 18 hours straight after you break your wrist from a skateboarding accident. July 22 • Wed 8 pm, doors at 7:30 @spiritofthebeehive $20 advance, $25 day of show • $2 off for SPACE members #portlandmaine

Next Thursday! Portland’s own 𝙕𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝘽𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙯 heads up the next edition of 𝙍𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙚𝙬𝙨 with musical accompaniment from 𝙅𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙮 𝘿𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮. Join us for this festive and unpredictable public event. READS THE NEWS is a new SPACE civics exercise where distinguished community members share and read selected news items, articles, nonfiction passages, reviews, or other material before a live audience, with musical or movement accompaniment. At a time when the news is both difficult to engage with and impossible to ignore, this program shifts the practice of media consumption from the private to the public, allowing for critical reading, historical context and reflection. Alright! Sydney, Australia’s high concept synth-pop showman 𝘼𝙡𝙚𝙭 𝘾𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙣 returns to SPACE on September 19 with his hit parade performance art and a new album, 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘵, which is slated for release in July. Tickets are on sale now. In New York City on his thirteenth birthday, planes fell from the sky and crashed into the World Trade Center. This had nothing to do with Alex Cameron. He wasn’t there. He was in Australia. By the time the planes hit, it wasn’t even 9/11 anymore. It was 9/12. This has been the secret rhythm of his art. One day ahead of a most terrible, but inevitable truth. Alex Cameron’s new album is called 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘵. 𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘦𝘵 was born of 9 forgotten long form screenplays written between the year 2022 and 2025. Rejected by the studios, lost to the LA wildfires, the charred remains fragmented and saved in songs of deep confusion and regret. September 19 • Sat 8 pm, doors at 7:30 @alkcm $25 advance, $30 day of show $2 off for SPACE members

One of the coolest venues in all of Portland, Maine! SPACE Gallery has been showing our work for the last two festivals, and we are so honored! After all, world touring musicians, known artists, and prominent local playwrights (DESI VAN TIL) and actors (MATTHEW DELAMATER) perform, exhibit, and otherwise hang out there... and then they are the movies they bring in! Thank you @space538 for welcoming us! You're the best!
