Affordable housing developers are planning a four-story, 64-unit apartment building in a mixed-use area in the heart of Bend’s west side, a project that would bring lower-cost housing to a highly desirable part of the city.
The proposed development would occupy a vacant 1-and-a-half-acre parcel on the corner of Columbia Street and Commerce Avenue — a stone’s throw from concerts, breweries and shops and a short walk from the Deschutes River.

Speed bump-like pedestrian crossings, concrete islands and new pavement are some of the changes slated for Galveston Avenue, stretching from the Deschutes River west to 17th Street. The City of Bend hopes to keep two-way traffic open throughout most of the project and limit full closures to a few days for paving. The three-phase project is expected to wrap up in the spring of 2027.
The project is designed to slow vehicles down and aid pedestrians across Galveston, which serves as both a bustling vehicle thoroughfare traffic and a walkable business hub, as the area grows denser with new commercial developments.

I reported on a couple eye-popping revelations regarding federal immigration officials’ having accessed Oregonians’ data a couple different ways. In June 2025, ICE, CBP and Homeland Security Investigations queried Bend PD’s Flock data 279 times. That was a human error on Bend PD’s part. Yet a lawsuit filed May 5 against the Oregon State Police alleges that state troopers have intentionally let federal immigration authorities make a million queries of Oregonians’ driver and criminal records annually since 2007. That’s more than 3,000 times a day, according to the lawsuit filed by nonprofit the Rural Organizing Project.
