15 year old Matt has no interest in becoming a voice actor (well at the start of the week anyway 😉). What he was interested in however was learning how it works to have your own business. How you manage your time, how you secure your work, how you promote yourself ~ the questions (and learning) are endless.
I’ve always thought it would be too difficult to manage work experience - how wrong I was!
With a little bit of forethought and planning to structure the week (and allowing for responding to what comes in) not only has Matt experienced a great range of activities, he’s also managed to do actual tasks for me. And completed them very thoughtfully, thoroughly and proved to be really helpful.
So - Freelancers - next time you’re asked and perhaps considering saying no, I’d highly recommended having a think about it. The sharing of info and help totally went both ways.

6 years ago today my working life changed completely. The arrival of Covid meant I could no longer record voice-overs in a studio in town, so my husband had the brilliant idea to transform a cupboard in our loft into a glorious little recording studio. A task he took on himself. In it, I’ve recorded hundreds of commercials & promos, narrated TV shows, animations, audiobooks & video games. Thanks to the wonder of technology I’ve been able to record live down the phone line from Finchley to studios in Chiswick, Amsterdam, Poland, New York & beyond.
This tiny booth has been the place where my children started their voice-over journeys. My daughter has recorded dozens of commercials & my son spent four years voicing Thomas the Tank Engine for All Engines Go on Channel 5, as well as two films, many commercials & audiobooks.It’s been quite the learning curve, but also the way I’ve been able to keep doing the job I love.
I’m endlessly & eternally grateful to @neumann.berlin@sourceelements & session link pro, for making remote recording so seamless & of course to @yaketyyakvoices for being the best agents in the biz♥️

First of all, do you love my beautiful, organised studio space, with its lampshade-less lamp, and its random rocks, and a microphone that came with a microphone stand that couldn't support its weight so I balance it precariously on top of the slipcase to the complete Far Side collection, and a letter claiming that my home's electrical work needs looking at but I'm not sure if it's a scam so I just leave the letter there to remind me every day that I should investigate further????

Anyway, today I did a proper, 2 hour, live directed session today with the folks from @plasticpictures.tv and @coda_post_production on the _very professional_ Source Connect.
Even though I've been at this a long time now - 4 years this year, 2 of them competently! - what really clicked for me today was that every completed voice over I hear in the wild is very likely stitched together from the best takes, just like this project was. So, while it's of course important to have good mic technique and good performance chops, what's even more important is having the flexibility to deliver the same line in a bunch of different ways so they have options. This occasional harsh-on-themselves perfectionist needed that.
(Also important, wearing the nice new, soft hoodie you got in Manchester at a market stall, causing you to nearly miss your train back to the airport. WORTH IT)
