Stranger Things Re-Recording Mixer Will Files explains a simple but powerful idea from mixing the show: “If everything is big, nothing is big.” Before Vecna speaks, many sounds are intentionally pulled back: environment, footsteps, and even parts of the music, so the moment can land with more impact. Great sound design is not just about adding more. It is about creating space for the story.

Stranger Things Re-Recording Mixers Will Files and Mark Paterson talk about designing the sound of Will Byers psychically “tuning in” to the Upside Down in Stranger Things. To create the feeling of being inside Will’s head, the mix uses very small reverbs pushed beyond normal levels and distorted environmental sounds to suggest an unstable signal.

Stranger Things Re-Recording Mixer Will Files explains how sound helps distinguish the two worlds: the Upside Down and the Right Side Up. Through heavy processing, unusual reverbs, and spatial movement, the Upside Down is designed to feel unstable and unnatural. Just as important, those same techniques are intentionally avoided in the normal world.

Stranger Things Re-Recording Mixers Will Files and Mark Paterson break down how sound transitions help shape its signature style. Using subtle reverb, flanging, and creative scene bridges, they blend dialogue, music, and effects into the show’s cinematic final mix. Even small sound choices help create the immersive world that defines the series.

The past few years have been filled with so many wild adventures, trips with friends, late nights we laughed until our stomachs hurt, tears, joy, and so many unforgettable moments. What we built together is a partnership that feels completely full of life. And yes… every time I look at you I swoon a little😮‍💨. But what makes you truly irresistible is the heart you carry — so generous, loving, and kind to everyone around you. One of the most beautiful things you’ve done is the way you opened your heart to Lily. Watching you become her Papa, seeing how safe and loved she feels with you, and how you helped her feel that she is truly part of a family — that means more to me than I can ever explain. And the way you welcomed us into the beautiful Files family made me feel loved and at home in a way that I never felt before. And now, just a few days ago, we welcomed our little boy, William Daniel Files, into the world — and you were by my side through every second of it. When you said “I’ll stay here with my wife” when I was in complete haze as our little boy was entering this world in the most beautiful and peculiar way possible, is such a powerful proclamation of love. And the fact that your birthdays are so close together feels like such a magical gift from life. I cannot wait to celebrate my beautiful Pisces boys for many years to come. ♓️ Watching you grow from the most extraordinary, hardworking and talented person I know into a husband and a father has been one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in a man. 2025 was a particularly memorable year for me on many levels, but one of the biggest standouts was wrapping up our multi-year epic journey with Matt & @rossduffer on @strangerthingstv . Working on this show has been one of the most challenging and rewarding projects of my entire career, and somehow also one of the most enjoyable. Big love to my @pacificstandardsound pardner @craighenighan for your truly iconic sound design, and for bringing us along for this crazy, amazing ride in the first place! I remember a DECADE ago when you told me that you were working on some cool new TV show with a weird name called “Stranger Things”… I’m thrilled that @netflix and @upsidedownpictures are giving this massive final episode the theatrical release that it deserves! @mark.paterson.90410 @653_9x and I got to spend a week with the Duffers on the legendary @glenglennfilmcenter Stage One (the second largest mixing theater in the world!!) to perfect the theatrical mix while @skip_kimball was across the street doing the same thing with the color, all to make sure the Cinema experience is everything that this story deserves. I hope you all love watching it as much as we loved making it :)
