The children who dream in colour (digital collage, 2024)
I had the honour of being invited to participate in Sudan Living Cultures, an exhibition at The Petrie Museum of Sudanese and Egyptian Archaeology. The project presented a chance to create artwork centred on ancient Sudanese traditions and artefacts, and explore the power of transgenerational knowledge through said heritage. I had the pleasure of working with @dinanursatti and @kandaka.khronicles , two outstanding artists whose work I deeply admire, and the brilliant polymath @faithingeeks who brought us together and gave us the space to create.
I don’t think I’ve worked on anything as timely or necessary, and so close to my heart.
****
I created three ‘worlds’ encouraging people to engage with Sudan’s immense history and imagine ancient Sudanese objects as gateways to other dimensions of possibility. They act as a counterweight to a quiet erasure of our past and as vessels to an optimistic future that cradles the entirety of our past. In each scene, I weave the country’s rich resources, the past and present, and people into a hopeful but murky dream, born at a time of despair and helplessness.
The artworks are digital collages combining various images from Sudan with ancient artefacts in surrealist settings that bend the arc of time.
****
Thanks to Sarita, Anna, Catriona, George and the entire Petrie Museum team, who paved the way for the project and supported us with care and exceptional thoughtfulness.
****
The exhibition is open until 9th of November 2024 at @petriemuseum
