Hello good peoples of the internet. I am dipping my toes back into the murky waters of social media, trusting that I have cultivated enough clarity to swim in them without choking or drowning, tempted as I can be by the seductive siren songs they play host to.
My first painting of 2023: “Rain Queen” Acrylic paint and oil pastel on canvas, 50x50cm.
A gift for my mother, for whom snakes have become a kind of totem. I too have consistently been fascinated by the ubiquity of serpent deities around the world, and the similarities between them. Shamanic cultures the world over describe a shimmering/multicoloured serpent who serves as a teacher of esoteric and medicinal knowledge, and is almost everywhere associated with ancestral spirits in sacred pools, waterfalls, rivers and the sea.
The snake as a symbol is of course loaded with all sorts of other meanings, and it interesting to place all these associations in dialogue with each other, with some differentiating between the ‘snake’ and the ‘serpent’. #serpent #snake #sacredsnake #rainbowserpent #snaketeacher #esoteric #dreams #sacredknowledge #shamanism #totem #serpentdeity #python #dreamsymbols #indigenousknowledge #acrylicpaint #oilpastel #visionaryart #psychedelicart #shamanicart
Yoooo... @rambling.bones@klumbsyoxx@richard_bruyns@sonus_oceanus and I will be playing at @smokingkillsbar on Saturday, 15 November 🥃🚬🎸🎉
It's in Melville, the place where I first saw some proper "city" live bands as a teenager at Roxy's (RIP) back when Pestroy, 16 Stitch, The Narrow, Fuzigish, etc. reigned supreme in the early 2000s (20 years ago now if you want to feel old)
Anyway. Come on through, tickets at the door, or a bit cheaper if you get them now - link in bio.
Take er easy folks 💚🤙

Earth and Ether was created as a symphony of language and sound, a work that breathes life into the intangible spaces of the human condition, and that feels less like performance and more like a ritual for the spirit.
The creators, a collection of friends and artists, weave a sanctuary for those of us seeking refuge in the tumult of loss, love, and the longing for belonging.
Come and dream with us!

“Acid Rain” Acrylic paint on board, roughly 40x50cm (2023). Built the frame for it too; not super professional but a gives it a nice presentation overall.

“War” (Working title), paper collage, A3 (2023/2024)
A series of analogue collage works using images sources from a 1960’s magazine series about WWII.
These are intended to capture something of the chaos and destruction of warfare - a sentiment as relevant today as it was when the original images were taken. An ongoing series, I intend to create more works using this same source material.

I have started the ambitious task of recreating the Major Arcana of the Tarot (based on the classic Rider-Waite art by Pamela Coleman Smith) in analogue paper collage. I’m not sure I’ll actually get through all 22, but this is what I have completed so far:
1) The Magician
2) The Tower
3) The Wheel of Fortune
4) The Hermit
The choice to go entirely without digital augmentation for the compositions has real limitations - it would be so much easier if I could play with the size and orientation of the images - but that’s part of the process: I am trying to embrace the act of sourcing component images by paging through magazines as a kind of bibliomancy.
This has been a great way to learn about Tarot symbolism and magickal correspondences: for eg, if I cannot find a direct representation of a given symbol, I learn more about what I can substitute in its place without compromising the integrity of the card’s meaning(s). That said, I will occasionally choose to leave out some symbols for sake of the composition.
The really trippy part is seeing these archetypes embodied in the images I come across, even before I do anything to them: many of the figures and relational dynamics embodied across both the Major and Minor Arcana are so readily apparent in the photographs that appear in ethnographic magazines, it really drives home the symbolic nature of this realm - that each person and each interaction are just iterations of the same fundamental blueprint of consciousness and matter; and conversely, how well the Tarot has captured this and how deeply it draws on this understanding.
