My Grandmother and namesake returned to America after fighting in World War II on a ship like this. She was one of the first 200 women to fight Nazis as a member of the newly established, "Women's Army Corp." Zonia Lida Heredia, a Puerto Rican citizen, with no family, crossed the English Channel under the cloak of the night, parsing carefully through fallen soldiers with oars, to make it to her station on the Red Bullet. The Red Bullet was operated by the Women's Army Corp, and delivered critical supplies and medical aid on the perimeter of battle fields. Her contributions are not depicted accurately in the history books - but mattered. She saved lives and eased death. She was awarded citizenship for her heroism.
Toward the end of the war, Zonia met my grandfather, Calvin Randall Hendrix, on the grounds of the Landing of Normandy.
Zonia is a warrior and she lives through me. I am so proud of her courage and sacrifice! Memorial Day is a special day - and one that will never be lost on me. Without heritage, who are we? Without truth, what are we, but lies? I will forever defend her honor and contributions, and never stand idly by.

History in the making. 🏁This week @katherineracing announced she will attempt The Double, racing the Coca-Cola 600 and the Indy 500 in a single day.
