Hrishikesh Hirway, creator and host of Song Exploder, joins Buzz Knight on Takin a Walk to talk about his debut album In the Last Hour of Light — a deeply personal record written in the wake of his mother’s death and during his father’s hospitalization.
He talks about the writer’s block that led to Song Exploder. About recording everything live with producer Phil Weinrobe — no headphones, no click track, no second takes. About how a two-word prompt from Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam sparked “Stray Dogs” in a single afternoon.
And his Dream Walk? A walk to the Griffith Observatory with his mom — who spent her final years unable to speak or walk. She never saw this chapter of his life.

I'm always stunned by the cognitive dissonance I experience when I'm relating to other artists vs the general public (or casual music fans). In order to to succeed as a musician, your music must also succeed at a very high level. Yet, successful artists are often referred to as sellouts. I think we should change the narrative.
