Solweig de Barry

Artist to watch: @solweigdebarry investigates the ephemeral nature of memory and lived experience. Using photographs as a starting point, she translates fragments of everyday life onto canvas and paper through a process of painterly subtraction. Lines, shapes, and traces dissolve the original motif while preserving its emotional resonance. The resulting visual worlds are spaces where form, perception and memory are continually renegotiated. Solweig de Barry studied fine arts at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK). Im Vorbeigehen schnell noch ein Snack gekauft und auf in die nächste Bahn, zur Arbeit, in den Urlaub, nach Hause. Begegnungen hier sind flüchtig, ein kurzes “Hallo” und “ich muss weiter”, keine Zeit, um groß Geschichten auszutauschen. Im Vorbeigehen heißt auch die Ausstellung, en passant, in der Arbeiten von fünf Künstler:innen aus Zürich, Straßburg, Winterthur und Berlin für einen kurzen Moment zusammen kommen. Fünf Positionen, die abstrakt wirken, aber doch Geschichten beinhalten, die sich mit der Zeit entfalten. 16. und 17. Mai, jeweils von 14 - 18 Uhr.

LABOUR OF LOVE 🌟 13 positions on invisible labour, gender power and societal equality Feb 27 – Mar 14, 2026 Introducing artist Solweig de Barry Solweig de Barry investigates the ephemeral nature of memory and lived experience. She translates fragments of everyday life onto canvas and paper through a process of painterly subtraction. Lines, shapes, and traces dissolve the original motif while preserving its emotional resonance. De Barry came to Berlin in 2008 to study at the UdK, where she completed her studies as a Meisterschülerin in 2014. In 2012, she completed a semester abroad at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. In 2020, Solweig de Barry was awarded the Goldrausch Scholarship. In 2023, she received the working grant from the Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn, followed in 2025 by the research grant from the Berlin Senate’s Department for Culture. Her works have been shown, among others, at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, Kunstverein Arnsberg, Städtische Galerie Offenburg, Kunstverein Heilbronn, and most recently at Künstlerverein Walkmühle Wiesbaden. She lives and works in Berlin. Solweig de Barry / “BETWEEN THICK AND THIN” Solweig de Barry’s practice explores the subtle tensions between density and fragility, presence and disappearance. Working across spatial installation and nuanced material arrangements, she investigates how shifts in form, rhythm, and layering influence perception. In “Between Thick and Thin”, the artist transforms the exhibition space into a field of delicate contrasts, inviting viewers to engage with quiet transitions, thresholds, and the sensorial weight of the in-between.
