All these excavations into remarkable, unpredictable humanity, celebrated by the sweet Philippines butoh community @kapwamovement through the inaugural Asia Butoh Gathering, Manila, February 2026. @sofyan_joyoutomo and @arirudenko.prehistoricbody got to represent Prehistoric Body Theater in a delightful conversation on butoh and its many interpretations across Asia. Tertanam ("Embedded") is a solo performance by @sofyan_joyoutomo , dreaming into Sangiran 17, our favorite mysterious Homo erectus. In this piece, he ponders lava flows, and on impulse must move to replant the ash-filled, barren landscape that was lush just yesterday. Meet Kemis. He’s our musang (palm civet) teacher, helping us craft the movement for Purgatorius (humanity’s primate ancestor from the extinction of the dinosaurs). This footage is from our choreology labs at Sarang Prehistoric (Prehistoric Nest), our beloved live-work jungle studio at the historic Lemah Putih Jungle Park on the outskirts of Surakarta, Central Java. After five incredible years of creative vortex in this space, the property has been sold. As we pack our things, we begin the search for a new home from which to craft the next chapter of Prehistoric Body Theater. We’re regrouping in Yogyakarta (Yogya/Jogja), Central Java’s bohemian epicenter, about two hours’ drive from the Nest. We’re seeking a simpler basecamp for now: enough office space and housing to keep our core production team together as we prepare for our next phase of work, including major international touring and residencies. One million years ago, before we became Homo sapiens, a mysterious group of early humans lived in what is now Central Java. They made stone tools. They tamed fire. They were Homo erectus—"Java Man"—and the most complete skull ever found is called Sangiran 17. On April 23, 2025, the @prehistoricbody crew brought the Sangiran Erectus back to life at ArtJakarta Gardens @artjakarta —against the skyscrapers, the fountains, the absurd sculptures. Our @prehistoricbody 2025 Hell Creek saga: 600lbs of Triceratops bone wrapped in plaster, one car hood, and 2.5 miles of badlands between us and the road. We strapped the bone to the hood, lowered it down a cliff, and dragged it across cracked clay and up one final brutal slope to meet the truck. In July 2025, our core members Ari, Sofyan, Alan, and Boy finally got to touch the deep-time story embedded in Hell Creek - digging alongside @burkemuseum and @uwbiology scientists in a prehistoric ecosystem from 66 million years ago. A world from just before, during, and after the apocalyptic mass extinction in the wake of the Chicxulub asteroid. The end of the reign of the dinosaurs. The dawn of the age of mammals. T.rex, Triceratops, Acheroraptor. And Purgatorius, our own primate ancestor who survived and inherited the world. In July 2025, Prehistoric Body Theater core members Ari, Sofyan, Alan, and Boy went on an epic adventure from Indonesia to Hell Creek, Montana with @burkemuseum and @uwbiology scientists to dig up dinosaurs. What is now a cracked clay badlands was once a lush coastal forest, home to the last dinosaurs before the asteroid - T.rex, Triceratops, and Acheroraptor, the star of the @prehistoricbody show “Ghosts of Hell Creek.” This is also the site where Purgatorius, our own primate ancestor, survived the asteroid and grew to take over the world. Delighted to present @prehistoricbody Prehistoric Body Theater’s “Ghosts of Hell Creek” at @lamamaetc La Mama Experimental Theater Club’s CREATURES FESTIVAL, a two-week inhabitation - infestation of the whole East Village NYC building with fabulous art-science-spirit explorations of the creatures we are and share the world with. Here I got the chance to share our performance story with our Indonesian team live on Zoom as part of the Global Conversations panel alongside Bold Theatre KE from Kenya @adamparkersd and @arojiotieno . On Halloween we also screened our 30-minute film rendition of the work “Ghosts of Hell Creek: primitive streak.” So fabulous to commune in kinship with the amazing La Mama CREATURES team @mauranguyendonohue Mia Yoo @eugenethepoogene @zishanugurlu and so many more who I want to name, but it was a huge endeavour!
