Last Week at Biobat Art Space, we gathered with @soft.genes and @seed_ai for a fascinating dialogue featuring:
🌱 Shelby Newsad @shelbae16 — building new visions for bio and health
🧬 Heather Dewey-Hagborg @hdeweyh — artist + biohacker pushing the edges of biopolitics and technology
🎙 Moderated by Christina Agapakis, synthetic biologist and upcoiming BioBAT guest curator.
A huge thank you to @xxtinaa for traveling from Boston and being such an incredible moderator and synthesizer of ideas. 🙏
This is only the first of many more conversations to come as we build toward our Fall 2026 exhibition on synthetic biology and AI, curated by Christina at BioBAT.
Thank you, to Olivia Stern of Soft Genes and Anna Rulloda, for being powerhouse organizers!
🎨 Featuted artwork by @loloostia , thank you allowing us to use your beautiful new natural pigment series as the backdrop for this discussion.

🏙️SEPT 10 - SG goes to NY ! Come hang with @soft.genes + @seed_ai at @biobat.artspace
How is the concept of “life” changed with our current and future generative tools in vitro and in silico?
Christina Agapakis moderates the evening’s convo - with Shelby Newsad, building new visions for bio, and @hdeweyh , information artist and bio-hacker - exploring the aesthetic and material intersection raised in this question.
RSVP⛓️💥Space is limited.
See you soon 🌱
Join us in LA’s Chinatown for a conversation about the future of humanity, science, art and life itself with Dr. Josie Zayner @jzayner , a legendary scientist/iconoclast, and Lucy McRae @lucymcrae , a visionary science fiction artist and filmmaker.
After that, hang out as long as you want and enjoy an open bar.
The event sponsored by Josie’s company The Embryo Corporation (@we.build.life ) Private event so please register.
21+ please remember your ID.

Dr. Josie Zayner is a genetic designer, with a PhD in Biophysics from the University of Chicago and a past life engineering microbes for Mars at NASA. Josie left institutional science to do something more meaningful: Make genetic engineering accessible to everyone. In 2016, she founded The ODIN and built DIY gene editing kits for the masses.
Artist Lucy McRae leads a multi-disciplinary, art-research studio investigating the impact future technologies have on human evolution. In parallel to her gallery and museum-focused art practice she thrives as a director, a maker, in the writer’s room and in the lab.
Fourth time’s the charm.
We’re taking the bio-art brigade to Chinatown. Featuring an open bar, low volume ambient music so we can actually hear each other, and a private space. Three hours for unfiltered exchange of biological ideas, hacks, critiques, etc.
Talk synthesis. Talk mutation. Osmose.
Capacity’s tight so RSVP now or regret it later. As usual, event is free.
21+ please remember your ID.

Join us @terraformlab for a meet-up with LA-based creatives & technicians interested in biology as an art medium. 🧬
So thrilled to welcome our community member and biodesign specialist, @mizmargaux as our host for the evening.
Learn about @mizmargaux ‘s biodesign world and ongoing projects synthesizing novel materials followed by a hands on workshop. Demos include holographic biofilm and considerations in working with chitosan and gelatin.
🧪Prepare to get your hands dirty (read: slimy!).

Join @soft.genes at Emergence: Art from Life next week for our second meet up.
Emergence is produced by @fathomers and is part of @pstinla : Art & Science Collide by Getty.
With DNA now in the toolkit of artists and engineers alike, we aim to offer a creative exchange of materials and skills that enable artistic realization.
Join us for an evening of discussion among technologists and creatives exploring biology on the genetic level in the Los Angeles area.
❇️ RSVP on our site. Space is limited.
