sand stories #3 Future Desert with Ida Soulard, Abinadi Meza, and Viola Graef July 10, 2022, 5 pm @lothringer13 The last Sand Stories gathering is also the closing of the exhibition N U R T U R Æ L We meet writer and curator Ida Soulard and artist Abinadi Meza who will present and discuss their publication "Manual for a Future Desert" (Mousse, 2021). The book “determines the coordinates for finding a future desert without deserting the future” and was an important source for the performance Solastalgia. Together, we will unpack the editor's artistic research and their approach to thinking, learning and unlearing with the desert. Some books will be available for you with us at Lothringer 13. The book launch will be followed by closing reflections on the themes introduced by the exhibition. This will be accompanied by a conversation with Viola Graef, a public health researcher working at the intersection of mental health, psychosocial well-being and the climate and ecological crisis. Accompanying the performative installation SOLASTALGIA as part of the exhibition N U R T U R Æ L at Lothringer 13 Halle in Munich in June 2022, the conversation format Sand Stories explores alternative narratives of catastrophism. What can be imagined with and out of the desert?

N U R T U R Æ L 09.06.-10.07. @lothringer13 With works by Kanako Azuma, Sarah Doerfel, Nile Koetting and THE AGENCY NURTURÆL, neologism composed of to nurture, nature, reality/fiction to nurture also: to nourish, to feed, to nurse nature from Latin "natura" for essential quality, in antiquity for "birth". The term describes phenomena of the physical world and life on earth. Although humans are part of nature, even if only a small part of the earth's biomass, human activities are often understood as separate from natural phenomena. Depending on the context, “natural" is understood as the opposite of "unnatural" or "supernatural". reality / fiction According to Elena Esposito, real reality is notionally unrealistic. It is contingent: the coincidental and the actually quite improbable can happen at any time. Fiction, on the other hand, is an explicitly invented, alternative reality. It presents a possible world that is so plausible that it could be true. check lothringer 13 halle website for the upcoming program, performance dates and www.nurturael.site in cooperation with @glasshouse.berlin for process and research insights photos by @mirkoschutz N U R T U RÆ L is a production by THE AGENCY in cooperation and coproduction with Lothringer 13 Halle. h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s: public workshop by Isabel Lewis / #isabellewis Erotic Sociability (for Webcam) online - language: english, live close captioning [transcript/subtitles] available info and tickets via FFT Düsseldorf and us In this online workshop, Isabel Lewis shares ideas around sociality and embodiment. No formal training of any kind is required to participate, and all adults with a curiosity about dance and other embodied practices are encouraged to attend. Lewis will introduce feminist sociologist Roslyn H. Bologh’s notion of “erotic sociability” as a form of interhuman sociality and guide a conversation about this as an alternative to the dominant 20th century relational modes of competition, conflict, and coercion. This workshop will then focus on the tuning and heightening of the senses in order to facilitate a state of hyper-presence that will aid in the move towards generative and affective forms of being together. The figure of the „unambitious stripper“ serves as a metaphor; guiding us to connect with our inner worlds in order to become more radically receptive to our outer worlds. The outward-oriented gaze of the stripper that usually reaches out to address and arrest the client with the ambition of monetary gain is turned in on itself in this scenario. In this movement workshop, instead of stripping off our clothes, we will use our imagination to turn our attention inward, toward the surface of our own skin, and imagine peeling away layers of social constructs and identity to access a personal inner space. Isabel Lewis (born 1981, Santo Domingo, DR) is an artist and choreographer who creates spaces of alternative sociality between human and other-than-human agents in the format she has named “the hosted occasion”. Lewis’s multi-sensorial occasions and other live artworks have been presented internationally, most recently by Kunsthalle Zürich, Sharjah Biennial, Gropius Bau, Roskilde Festival, Dia Art Foundation, and Tate Modern, among others. Part of the #TakeCare Residenz “Touch, Theatre and Performance”. #eroticsociability #embodiment #curiosity #webcam #gaze #unambitiousstripper #metaphor #movementworkshop #hyperpresence

h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s: public lecture by Laura U. Marks I Tactile looks - creating haptic encounters in live and mediated performance online - language: english, live close captions [transcript/subtitles] available 5€ tickets via FFT Düsseldorf Performances are capable of establishing embodied connections with the audience. Laura U. Marks will suggest practical ways to enhance the multisensory qualities of said connections. These suggestions draw on Laura Marks’ concept of haptic visuality, as well as on a broader concept of embodied empathy. Even if performance moves online, it remains possible to establish intimacy as images, sounds and words are compressed in order to travel across networks. This kind of low-fidelity engagement is not only satisfying for the audience but healthier for the planet, as we will see during the lecture while engaging with selected works from the Small File Media Festival. Laura U. Marks works on media art and philosophy with an intercultural focus as well as an emphasis on appropriate technologies. Her most recent book is Hanan al-Cinema: Affections for the Moving Image. Along with Azadeh Emadi, she is a founding member of the Substantial Motion Research Network. Marks is Grant Strate Professor in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. h a p t i c a f f i n i t i e s is initiated by Anneliese Ostertag, Belle Santos, Rahel Spöhrer and Sofie Luckhardt and hosted by FFT Düsseldorf. Part of the #TakeCare Residenz “Touch, Theatre and Performance”. Funded by the Alliance of International Production Houses e.V. within the framework of the „Neustart Kultur: #TakeCare“ programme supported by the Fonds Darstellende Künste e.V. and sponsored by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media. #lauraumarks #hapticvisuality #embodiedempathy #hapticencounters #smallfilemediafestival #multisensory #multisensoryexperience #multisensoryart #performance #tactility #skinofthefilm #touch #multisensorytheory #hapticaffinities
