Mariana Tilly presents Relentless Pursuit, opening on 17 April 2026, at 18:00.
Curated by Diogo Pinto
Relentless Pursuit offers the sort of memorabilia that people carry as they move countries, as years come and go, and whose stubborn persistence compels incessant re-fishing. Bumper cars, carousels, a traffic dysfunction, a dumb building, a graffiti; the feeling of driving at night through the suburbs of your hometown. Spinning in roundabouts, unsure of the exits, following some weird intuition that situates everything in relation to the sea, where all the waters flow. Many intersections pass but, alas, some places were not made to make sense.
The exhibition bridges Lisbon to Basel, as if a single outdated phoneline intimately connected them.
Mariana Tilly is a Portuguese artist based in Switzerland. She holds an MA from Institute Art Gender Nature FHNW and is a PhD candidate at the same Institute. Her work deals with the role of visual representations in the shaping of cultural histories and public perception, often focusing on Portuguese-speaking phenomena. Her first solo show, EMOÇÃO EMOTION, opened in December 2025 at Spirit Shop in Lisbon. She is a recipient of the Cristina Spoerri Kunstpreis, and holds a Doc.CH grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Today I want to show you the work of five women artists, Portuguese or working in Portugal, in an exhibition that proposes an expanded approach to still life.
Beatriz Capitulé (1998, PT) presents a series of works created with wool on canvas — black-and-white landscapes. Initially drawn on paper, the images become almost abstract when transferred to canvas. Each gesture functions like a pixel, in an almost performative process in which mistakes are embraced and cannot be corrected.
With Lucrezia Bracci (1997, IT), we encounter a group of sculptures that explore the relationship between the body and invisible forces that shape reality. Through the contrast between fabrics and rigid elements, she creates tensions that make the space cease to be neutral and acquire a new intensity.
Carla Dias (1972, MZ) presents paintings depicting everyday objects in compositions that evoke traditional still life. However, subtle distortions and unexpected combinations reveal emotional tensions and imbalances that reflect contemporary life.
With Sofia Mascate (1995, PT), we see a series of paintings that develop a fabulous imaginary world, with soft colors and diffused luminosity. Through an arrangement that evokes display cases, objects are placed on glass in different layers, creating depth. This organization reinforces the surreal dimension of the compositions, which seem to exist between the real and the imagined.
Finally, Matilde Sambo (1993, IT) presents prints and sculptures in bronze and glass that appear to emerge from the walls. Her work centers on the body as a site of memory and transformation, exploring identities in construction and reflecting on human fragility.
