Exhibition texts for « Beyond Our Horizons: From Tokyo to Paris », currently on view at la Galerie du 19m @le19m an initiative by @chanelofficial Beyond Our Horizons: From Tokyo to Paris invites visitors on a journey through material, creativity, and craftsmanship. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of the five elements — earth (土, do), water (水, sui), fire (火,ka), wind (風, fu), and void (空, ku) — the exhibition explores the deep connections between nature and creation and highlights how artists and artisans have long drawn inspiration from nature’s rhythms. This ongoing process of transmission and renewal brings us back to what is essential: every act of creation opens a dialogue.

Afro-Ikebana from a series of large scale Afro-Mingei sculptures by Theaster Gates. His show, A Clay Sermon, an exposition of the significance of clay, it’s material and spiritual legacies @whitechapelgallery Alongside his own work, Gates made a selection of historic ceramics such as Leach, Hamada, Cardew, and Rie. Exciting to see these greats all together and when things and ideas organically tie up in beautiful hand thrown vessels.

Potters Paradise. We had wanted to visit Cornwall ever since visiting the Japan Folk Crafts Museum or Mingeikan in Tokyo many moons ago. As a birth place to British studio pottery and a enigmatic force in the crafts development, we were delighted to finally explore the western exchange of a movement we have mostly admired from eastern perspectives.

A conversation between past and present. A moment to reflect on the cyclical nature of the lives of leaves and others. Looking back at this photo and a small feeling of warmth bathes my skin, maybe it was the late autumn sun or maybe something else entirely.

A rite of passage from this months less than lovely shower experience to one of the most profound bathes I have ever bathed in.

The cedar lined bathroom of Russel Wrights Dragon Rock Studio at Manitoga took inspiration from Pullman train cars as well as his frequent visits to Japan. The home is the true embodiment of Wright’s design philosophy which celebrates good design for living in creative harmony. A true environmentalist before the word existed.

It’s all a story of circles and cycles. Untitled, 1971 by Donald Judd was commissioned by Philip Johnson for his Glass House in New Canaan, CT. Judd and Johnson were friends. Johnson traded a Frank Stella from his collection to Judd for this site specific piece, his first ever in concrete. That Stella piece resides on Spring Street in Soho. Last slide shows Ozymadandias by Julian Schnabel, a piece of drift wood eternally cast in iron.
