SSP’s headquarters is located in the historic Granada Buildings, a creative center located in LA’s Westlake neighborhood, designed in 1927 by journalist turned developer Franklin Harper. 🍃 Originally a live-work building, Charles W. Moore noted it “reeks of panache among Southern California’s architecture and design community,” in his 1984 book, The City Observed — shortly after it was designated a Historic Cultural Monument by the LA Cultural Heritage Commission in 1981. Today we share this unique building comprised of “studios and shoppes” with @lareviewofbooks @otownhouse @agencyartifact and @hawkinsnewyork among other notable creatives, filmmakers, and organizations. 📷 by Anne Laskey, 1978 via @lapubliclibrary . This photo was taken by 15 year old Annie with her mother Marlene Laskey (1933-1989). Marlene was a Michigan native who moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s and became a Los Angeles historian and architecture enthusiast. At the time of her death, Marlene was working on a Master of Urban Planning degree at UCLA and was an interviewer for UCLA's Oral History program.

Elevation studies for an in-progress rebuild in Altadena, exploring a clustered, asymmetrical shed roof strategy. Clerestories and a mix of fixed, operable, and paneled windows bring in natural light while supporting privacy, ventilation, and framed views of the garden and sky. Designed to hold the rhythms of work, rest, and creative life for a warm, tight-knit household. 🌱

Beautiful detail at El Andaluz in Santa Barbara, designed by Jeff Shelton @jeffsheltonarchitect , 2009. Here, Shelton’s custom “Nasturtiums” stair riser tiles meet striped treads in a joyous, layered composition.

Exterior rendering for a second story addition to a family home in the historic Rossmoyne neighborhood of Glendale, California. Inspired by our cinematic clients’ love for historic details, layered views, and a home that affords function and togetherness, our renovation adds bedrooms, improves flow, and opens the house up to the mountains, city, and everything in between. 🏡 Rendering by @uendtaning + @chloedavis2 Design by @socialstudiesprojects

Looking back to Mountaintop House, a major renovation of a historic property located in Los Angeles. Completed in 2021. Under a Mills Act contract, our alterations to the exterior were limited. Instead, we took cues for the interior renovation from existing prairie-style details within the house, including a duet of ceiling heights and a recurring picture rail trim. Materials include new waxed cherry cabinetry throughout, polished nickel fixtures, unglazed quarry tile, foundry brick, handmade wall tiles, and quartzite surfaces unified through a consistent strategy of early modernist detailing rendered in earthy textures. The result feels historic, fresh, and appropriate for our young client family and their perch overlooking Los Angeles. Construction by @beaulaughlin Collaborator @honeyedfigs 📷 by @despite_everything
