The committee and members lament the passing of a much loved, and highly decorated member of SRSC. Vale Phyllis O’Donnell, who was 87 years 🖤🧡🙏 Phyllis was an original member of Snapper Rocks surf riders club in 1964 and was so proud of a very young Stephanie Gilmore winning her first surfing world title 🖤🧡 Phyliss was the first SRSC world surfing champion, she was first person to ever been named a World Champion when she won the Womens’s division of the 1964 ISA World Championships in Manly Beach. Phyllis O’Donnell will be honoured and dearly missed at the impending SRSC Inc 60 Yr reunion party and a more comprehensive obituary will be posted in the near future. To all her family an friends and especially long term partner Judy our very sincere condolences and on behalf of all members of SRSC past and present love and light. RIP Phyllis O’Donnell 🌹🙏🖤🧡

Back in 2005, surf media headlines read: “Wildcard @stephaniegilmore 17-year-old school student, has gone on a RAMPAGE at the Roxy Pro, taking down two world champs to win her first CT event.” Fast forward to 2026 — with 6 previous Gold Coast Pro wins, 8 World Titles under her belt, returning from a 2 year retirement - nothings changed but everything’s changed - she found her flow slowly n then the RAMPAGE came naturally. After two CT events this year Steph had found herself ranked 23rd on the World Tour. This marked her worst start to a season ever, especially after two years away from the World Tour. The eight-time World Champion was hoping to reset at her home break of Snapper, a place she’s dominated since skipping school in 2005 to win as a 17-year-old wildcard. Throughout her career she’d secured six Gold Coast Pro wins from seven finals appearances and only once lost before the quarter-finals. Steph fired up over the weekend and wrote another chapter in surfing history on Monday by winning an unprecedented 7th Snapper Pro.
