OPEN CALL FOR SMC STUDENTS:
Are you an art major? Or have you taken a few art classes on campus? If so, and if you’d like to display your work on campus, the Exhibition and Display program is currently accepting submissions for a vinyl banner show.
The banners will be located on the second floor of the Student Services building at the Counselors Offices. The banners will be up until Spring 2027. As students come in and out from their appointments, they’ll see your amazing work and the opportunities SMC’s Art Department (@smcarts ) offers for its students!
Deadline to submit images of your work is May 22nd! The link is in our bio, and you’ll also find our flyer with QR codes across the different campuses. If you need support with getting high-quality images of your work, you can schedule a photoshoot with our curatorial team through the form.

Thank you Maaz Alin and @smdailypress for featuring our latest exhibition ‘Calls From Home’ in their newest article!
The article highlights SMC students in the Gallery Exhibition & Display course and their show at @18thstreetarts “Calls from Home.” Working collaboratively with the artist residency center’s staff and 8 incredible LA-based artists, “Calls from Home” explored important themes about community, displacement, and identity. In bringing this project to life, students got hands-on experience in curating and executing a successful exhibition. To read the full article, click the link in our bio.
A big shout out to Professor Garcia Kim (@kimwantscoffee )for their guidance. Thank you everyone for the huge support!

The Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming group show HERE/NOW❗
Join us for the opening reception on May 22nd from 5-8pm🎉
HERE/NOW, a group exhibition of student work made in Santa Monica College’s Artist Mentor Program. Dormant for almost a decade, previously known for producing the leading contemporaries in the art world, Mentor is now back. A collection of driven artists under the guidance of Emily Silver and Carlson Hatton form a community dedicated to pushing each other’s practice.
HERE/NOW embodies both the time and space we habit. How do we respond to and shape our surroundings? What does it mean to be present? Engaging with our environment through the visual, auditorial, and tactile, we define our world’s orientation: here and now. Coming from varied phases of life, cultural backgrounds, and beliefs, the works represent who we are as individuals as well as our collective voice.
It is our job as artists to define the present. The 2025 mentor class is heavily engaged in the social and political issues that will impact our futures. Why is “now” important? Marking the moments of omnipresent transition, this show is a time capsule. The art anchors the viewer in the present through confrontation, authenticity, and humor. In the future we will be able to reflect on events, ideas, and emotions that become versions of who we are, where we are, and when we are.
