The Nepean River is undoubtedly the Penrith regions main geographical feature which stretches far and narrow along the foot of the Blue Mountains. Sited on the riverbank is the River Road House, a two storey alteration and addition in Leonay NSW.
The project responds to the ownerâs desire for connection to the river within the integrity of the original envelope. This clear engagement focused on new primary living spaces to the first floor, enhancing the natural setting with promising views of calm waters and morning sunrises from an open plan layout. The design and materiality is an ode to the ever transforming streetscape and the ownerâs continuing collection of interiors.
Â
To sustain the assembly of entertainment in the kitchen and private open space at rear, an organised axis for circulation and movement are linked via a northern breezeway. Enhancing the fluidity of both living planes, those who inhabit the space, ebb and flow, to and from, nurtured by sunlight and sense of calmness the building creates through this private exchange.

Masonry nearing its completion at Cherry. The brickwork will see an application process of acid wash, stripping back layers to return the facework to their original hues, or a natural process where the recycled mineral white wash is simply left in its current state.
Thrilled to see this stairwell formed on site at the Cherry project, where privacy, natural sunlight, and movement within the home, are enhanced by a wide span opening facing the Elouera Bushland Reserve
Earlier this month at the Colgate
project, our builder @signature_build
had the pleasure of meeting Mr John Gourlie, a former resident, who happened to drop by and surprisingly find his letter in a bottle from 1961 that was uncovered during construction. What a day for all it was on site!
From the Builder: "About 4 months ago, we found a 59 year old message in a bottle under the floor of the Colgate cottage that gave us peek into the history of this beautiful heritage home.
Today I had the pleasure of meeting John Gourlie, the writer of the note who took a walk through his refurbished childhood home and shared many of the cherished memories he had while living in the home with his brother Ryan, Father Walter and Mother Adele.
This unexpected walk through memory lane reminded us of the importance of building conservation and his approval gave our team so much gratification and showed that our efforts donât go unnoticed."
