SALUTE 53 is a wrap! With even more visitors than last year this was our biggest event yet and we are so thrilled to have shared this "cavalry charge" with everyone. We’d like to say a massive "thank you!" to everybody who took the time to take part in the SALUTE Painting Competition this year. The cabinets were filled with over 500 entries and the level of talent and creativity on display was unbelievable! Congratulations are in order for Jiazhou Guan whose “Praise the Sun” entry took home the SALUTE Shield for Best in Show. There was fierce competition in the Fantasy Single Figure category this year, here’s what Jiazhou had to say about their experience: “This is my third year attending SALUTE, making it the event I’ve participated in the most since coming to the UK. I still can't forget the last time I won Best in Show—at the 51st SALUTE two years ago—with a Fyreslayer unit. The excitement from that moment has never faded; it was also the first time I had ever won Best in Show at any competition. This year’s award-winning piece, Praise the Sun, is inspired by Solaire from Dark Souls. In my concept, I focused on sunlight as the central atmosphere, using it to shape both the environment and the storytelling of the character. I’m incredibly grateful that the judging team appreciated this piece, and I’d also like to thank them for their hard work.” Jiazhou's only been entering the painting competition since SALUTE 51 in 2024, this means that of the three SALUTE Shields awarded so far, Jiazhou has two of them - an incredible feat. Jiazhou is now one of only three people to have won the Best in Show trophy at SALUTE more than once. Lucia and Szen have been tirelessly fundraising for the Institute of Cancer Research’s vital childhood cancer research since their 13-year-old daughter, Annamaria, died from rhabdomyosarcoma in 2016. Last weekend, they raised £2872.49 and wish to thank the public (you know who you are!) and club members who donated so many items to sell at their stall. You are amazing! We know many people came to the stall just to donate a few pounds, share stories and say that the efforts of Lucia and Szen really resonated with you. Come with me to Salute 53!! ✨ On Saturday I had the amazing opportunity to visit @slwsalute s wargaming convention in London! This was my first time attending Salute and I loved it! Getting to see so many cool vendors and exhibitors all under one roof was an absolute treat!! I got to hangout with some old hobby friends and make new ones, all whilst enjoying our shared passion for miniatures and wargaming. 53rd Salute a cracking day out! Cavalry was its major theme. 🐴 Previous time attending this all day wargaming trade show was 2011. Not sure where the time went between but all my previous acquisitions are painted now except the Forgeworld Marienburg Class Landship! 🧜‍♀️ Pleasantly surprised by the modest haul of acquisitions that we each brought home to Dorset. Judging a painting competition with the kind of high-quality entries that we saw at last weekends Salute53 is no mean feat! Luckily, we have a formidable team of judges headed up by Tommie Soule and comprising of @martin_fen_model_show_ @a_c_miniatures @phoenixminiatureart @kevdallimore @conradmynett @apsmini_painting and myself! This year, I judged the Fantasy Single Miniature category, one of the largest and most hotly contested of the categories. This reel gives you a behind the scenes look at a bit of that process. It was no easy task to pick the winner (watch till the end to see which miniature I chose as the top of the category and which went on to win Best in Show!) Thank you so much to everyone who entered a miniature into the contest, I would love to have photographed them all, but my time was taken up on making hard decisions! Thank you to my fellow judges for all of your good advice and hard work on the day and to my assistant @laughgasm616 and all the other assistant judges who worked so hard to support us!
