From Damascus to Berlin and Vice Versa: Artistic Paths Between Revolution, Diaspora, Challenges and New Beginnings
ذهاب و إياب، من دمشق إلى برلين: مسارات فنية بين الثورة والمنفى، بين
التحديات والبدايات الجديدة
17:00 VR short film and performance “How Am I Here?” by Tanween Collective & slowfuture.
The talk, hosted by the Tanween Collective, explores how Syrian artists—shaped by the Arab Spring and the Syrian revolution—navigate life and artistic expression between Berlin and Syria. It examines how exile, displacement and new beginnings have influenced their work and how, after the fall of the dictatorship and during the difficult transition that followed, they are contributing to Syria’s cultural renewal. The discussion also examines the realities of diversity in Germany’s arts sector, questioning how inclusive cultural structures truly are and highlighting the gap between diversity policies and the lived experiences of artists.
Panelists:
Hazem Saleh – Syrian dramaturg and theater scholar exploring performance across borders.
Kenda Hmeidan – Berlin-based actress who brings the Syrian exile experience to the stage and screen.
Mey Seifan – Interdisciplinary choreographer and curator working at the intersection of performance, technology, and diversity.
Wesam Krema – Musician and cultural manager connecting communities through music and education.
Following the panel, at the same venue, there will be a presentation of the VR short film and performance “How Am I Here?” by Tanween Collective & slowfuture. This immersive work explores the dreams and nightmares Syrians experience about returning home. Blending technology and narrative, the piece offers an evocative look into the emotional terrain of longing, memory, and return.

Mey Seifan’s transmedial performance, „How am I here?!“, explores the restless feelings surrounding homecoming for Syrians after the diaspora. Through documented late-night dreams and an immersive audio-visual journey, Seifan explores collective trauma. The performance addresses the recurring pattern of dreams turning into nightmarish escapes, incorporating techniques of Lucid Dreaming to deal with the challenges of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Using VR technology and choreographed enactments, Seifan captures the dissonance between nightmarish homecoming and the oppressive reality of exile. The collaborative efforts of the multidisciplinary team and Slowfuture have brought Seifan’s vision to life, inviting audiences to contemplate the profound impact of this emotional conflict. The audience is left contemplating whether to awaken or stay on this haunting train of emotions.

Years after their displacement, many Syrians have restless feelings about homecoming. They wonder whether a return will fulfill the desired expectations or become another nightmare. Where would the shelter be when homecoming becomes a nightmare?
We live in an age of collective trauma. Millions are displaced because of war and are forced to leave their homes. “But where is the protecting shelter when returning home becomes a nightmare?” asks choreographer Mey Seifan (@mey.seifan ) in advance of her new work, “How am I Here?” based on documented nightly dreams that express fears of homecoming.
🟡 Join Mey Seifan and Basel Naouri from @slowfuture_studio for an intimate conversation regarding their work and process at MANIFEST:IO 2025 🗓️ Feb 23 at 12pm, tickets available in the link in bio! 🎟️

Viewers experience several virtual rooms, and each of them represents themes of the recurring dreams. In each room, different chorographical movements, which were recorded using a green screen, are assembled into action scenes, and generated via artificial intelligence. In these recordings, the performers’ movements vary between flowing and distorted, simulating fear in its various forms. The sound system design helps transmit the audience into a room from which there is no escape. In this space, the audience can move freely within virtual reality, where there are no pre-determined paths and no rules. The experience is like an invitation to re-possess the dream (similar to lucid dreaming) in an effort to control its emotional impact.
