We had an unexpected visitor today while seining the river! Students from @paceuniversity were stretching the seine net out into our marsh channel when a baby snapping turtle swam right in!
Snapping turtles are commonly associated with freshwater. However, they can tolerate low salinity areas like brackish water marshes, as long as there is still a freshwater source nearby for drinking. The Beczak marsh makes a perfect habitat- tall grasses and muddy substrate are optimal for hiding.
Further inland, the highest marsh zone is frequently filled with rainwater, ensuring this snapper stays hydrated!
As adults they average 8-14 inches in shell length and 10-35 pounds. This young one was only about 2 inches and likely born within the last year.

We’re excited to announce a new Community Engagement and Environmental Science Fellowship at CURB! This unique 2-year fellowship involves teaching one undergraduate course per semester at Sarah Lawrence College in environmental science, marine science, aquatic biology, or related fields, in collaboration with current faculty. At CURB, the fellow will serve as a scientific advisor and instructor for educational trainings and courses for students of all ages. The fellow will also work with CURB staff to conduct Hudson River ecology, water quality, and environmental justice projects that include both fieldwork and data analysis.
This two-year fellowship begins August 1, 2026 and is funded by the Endeavor Foundation. Completion of a Ph.D. in environmental science, ecology, marine biology, conservation biology, or a related field by the start of the fellowship term is required.

Last week the CURB staff worked in partnership with NY Sea Grant and USCRP to install a MyCoast: CoastSnap documenting station at the Hudson River in Habirshaw Park. This station encourages observers to virtually document the state of the coastline in downtown Yonkers over time - ultimately supporting the management of valuable coastal environments. To learn more about the station and to see photos already taken of the shoreline, check out the link in our linktree!
A special thank you to our project partners: @newyorkseagrant , @uscoastalresearch , @mycoastny
CoastSnap is an international network of simple camera mounts at coastal locations that invite the public to take a photo and share it to a website. With your mobile device and our CoastSnap photo cradles, you can capture a valuable record of the shoreline state and share it on our website. Over time, your CoastSnaps will record coastal change, helping us understand why some coastlines are more dynamic or resilient than others.

🦀Don’t forget to join us down at the waterfront this SATURDAY, April 18!🐟 High school students from @yonkerspublicschools will share river research they’ve been collecting and studying this year in EELS Team. Afterwards, all attendees are invited to join us for some community science seining (net fishing) and eel monitoring. Come celebrate the accomplishments of our local teens and learn about the Hudson River! There will be food, fun, and lots of fish facts! 🐟
Today is SLC Giving Day, our special 24-hour fundraising challenge! Your gift of any amount can go directly towards supporting CURB’s meaningful research and education programs. Visit slc.edu/givingday and select your designation as CURB under the Lifelong Learning category.
From field trips to internships and community events to community science, your support will help us continue to educate and engage in Hudson River research and ecology.
A timely celebration. A timeless impact. #SarahLawrenceGivingDay
Come one, come all to CURB for our annual EELS Team Community Day 🌎 On April 18th, our EELS interns will present their research projects on the Hudson estuary, followed by a seining activity open to all!

Save the Date! On April 18th our EELS Team will showcase the research and data collection they’ve been working on all year!
These Yonkers high schoolers have been very busy the last several weeks…
📋🌊Counting and monitoring migrating eels (398 just this week!)
🌡️☀️Tracking water and weather conditions
🧑🎓📈PLUS working on their research presentations!
Stay tuned for more info on this 4/18 community event!

Yesterday was International Day of Action for Rivers! CURB takes actions every day to help protect and preserve our local rivers.💧💪🏼
Through research and education, we closely monitor water quality and biodiversity trends. Our Hudson River Estuary has overcome decades of heavy pollution, but threats to the river still pose risks to it being a healthy and thriving place for both people and wildlife. 🐟🚣♂️
🦠That is why efforts like our fecal bacteria testing are so important- thanks to help from many community scientists, we keep a close eye on how sewage leaks and CSO events impact areas of the Saw Mill and Hudson River.

This morning the CURB team caught their first glass eel of the migration season. This is almost a full month later than last year, due to colder winter conditions. This eel will resume its journey north in search of freshwater tributaries of the Hudson River. CURB's eel sampling will continue through Memorial Day. #hudsonriver #glasseel #sarahlawrencecollege @nysdec
Eel migration season is upon us! Today the fyke net was installed in our salt marsh. Next week we start monitoring daily with the help of Yonkers Public School interns, @sarahlawrencecollege interns, and volunteers.
Curious to learn more about eels and the project? Flip through our informational slides, created by SLC intern, Stella!

Today concluded our week-long Winter Water Academy! 20 high school students from Yonkers Public Schools had a packed week of hands-on learning and scientific testing of our local waterways!
What were we doing all week?
🌊Discovering the physical conditions of the Hudson River
🏭Visiting the Yonkers Wastewater Treatment Plant to understand how wastewater gets treated.
🌡️Testing water chemistry and exploring water pollution solutions
🦠Measuring presence of a fecal bacteria indicator, enterococcus in the Saw Mill and Hudson River. (This signals if our waterways have e.coli and other harmful fecal bacteria in them)
🎨Getting creative with @weartone1 and exploring the connections between art and science careers.
