RIEP RUPIE EDWARDS 🕊️🕊️🕊️
We are very sad to hear of the passing one of the truly great producers and singers of the golden era of 60s and 70s Jamaican music
His achievements in music were monumental. From major hit Irie Feelings and appearing on Top Of The Pops, successful record shops in Jamaica and of course his legendary Dalston shop, taking Trojan to court for unpaid earnings and winning, reams of high quality songs and boundary pushing productions with multiple labels to release his own music and others
Me @ben_lion_vibes and @skinshapemusic were very lucky to meet him around 2017. We had the honour of releasing 4 singles from his catalogue and remained in contact throughout these years. We got to spend some magical afternoons at his place in Dalston and two or three very memorable tape transferring sessions at our then studio in Tottenham. His well preserved tapes whizzed off beautifully on Revox machine, the early Scotch tapes in particular had very little shedding and it felt like we were in the room they were recorded. There was always a hope we would find unreleased gems, but Rupie was highly efficient with his productions during the 60s and 70s. He would tell us that he would actually go into the studio todo full sessions with bands very rarely, often only once a twice a year or less. He would then utilise these riddims with many versions, vocals, deejay cuts and overdubs.
He thought extremely creatively about recorded music.. one of the great examples was Jamaica Serenade. With Errol Thompson at Randys engineering he built the entire riddim himself (apart from the Sax from Herman Marquis). Starting with the kick drum which he played with his hand, he built the drums up layer by layer, multitracking and bouncing down then adding on bass, guitar etc himself. Way ahead of its time ! He regaled many other great tales of the music industry in Jamaica and UK whilst we sat with Tex Johnson.
Beyond the music found him to be a very kind, generous, humble and humerous man. His manners totally impeccable, we’d love to receive his beautifully written emails. His music touched millions around the world and will continue to do so. RIEP
