Grad Weekend Pt. 3: The Big Day
While my life path has been anything but linear, learning has always been at the heart of how I move through the world. For various reasons, I’ve missed each of my graduation ceremonies (x2), but my time at Brown was so special, I knew I couldn’t miss this one.
It was an honor and and a privilege to study public health at Brown University- not only one of the oldest, most prestigious institutions in the country- but also one of the most progressive, academically rigorous and intellectually excellent. I’m deeply grateful for the community I found there and the many brilliant minds I had the opportunity to learn from and alongside.
During my public health studies, I spent the last two years collaborating with and contributing to the Center for Mindfulness on research and building modules for a mindfulness app- which aims to understand and mitigate burnout in health care providers- a critical issue and an urgent call to action. I will be continuing these efforts in the future, and hope it will result in less-stressed, more balanced providers and more mindful health care for us all.
In a time of deep division, I’m proud to stand with others committed to science, academia and public health equity. Sitting in that ceremony, surrounded by people with the same fierce commitment to a better world, was incredibly moving and I’ll never forget it.
Thank you again to Emily, Jimmy, and James, for making the trip with me. Your love and support meant everything. And thank you to the Brown community, it’s been an absolute pleasure.

Sunday Funday! I hadn’t pinned a race number in several years, but stayed active in the sport in other ways- and some of that time went to advocating for, and mentoring women coming up. I wanted to support a local race that is rooted in Michigan’s cycling history and also offered equal payout for the men and women.
Women’s cycling has long been the underdog and the disparities in men’s and women’s coverage, payouts, sponsors, and salaries are real. Since I’ve been racing, there has slowly been a shift in the attitudes and mindsets for more equality between the two, but there is still a very long way to go. This shift begins at home, at local events like this, and I’m proud to have been able to support a little part of that change.
I’ve been lucky enough to win on this course multiple times and am grateful to have had the opportunity to add another podium to the list. Cheers to @cadieuxbc for supporting women’s cycling and thank you for a great day!

Quick little throwback to the end of 2020. I’ll never forget that exact moment. Yes the photo was staged, but the thoughts going on in my brain were not. 2020 was hard on all of us. And, in addition to the very isolated world we were all adjusting to living in, I had some major personal struggles that year. 2020 broke me in so many ways…broke my heart, broke my confidence, broke me open…I couldn’t imagine how I’d ever recover. But in that moment, I felt strong and like myself again. I started to see some light peek out around the perpetual dark cloud that hung over me. I started to believe that maybe this brokenness wasn’t permanent. I’ll never forget that moment. Ever. I’m endlessly grateful.
