It was fifty years ago today Gigi Radice taught the band to play. On 16 May 1976, Torino FC won their seventh Serie A title, twenty-seven years from their last and the Superga air disaster – when fate started interfering with Torino's destiny. It was a title that redeemed an entire population, that sent the working class to heaven in the city of FIAT and the Agnelli dynasty. An afternoon when football merged with mysticism, from the pitch to the following day's march towards Basilica of Superga – where Grande Torino rests. It was all about barbera against the Avvocato’s champagne, flowing deep red like the 'granata' shirts soaked in May sweat. Many wept. Renato Zaccarelli, the midfield count of that side, still does to this day. Someone even confessed to having overcome their fear of death at the sight of the Scudetto once more upon where it belonged, on the shirt worn by the Grande Torino. After all, Toro is a matter of style but above all of blind faith. It's not a choice, but a family affair. That afternoon my grandfather Gianfranco locked himself away in the cellar, no radio in sight, only to be released at the final whistle. Perhaps he wept as well. I do not know, however, how my other grandfather Luciano spent that day. The wine certainly flowed freely, he didn't just enjoy drinking it: he sold it. Yet the photographs remain, like the one with Paolo 'Puliciclone' Pulici, number 11 on his back and hero of that Scudetto. On Tuttosport, Giampaolo Ormezzano titled "Toro Lassù qualcuno ti ama" – Up there someone loves you. Casino Royale quoted it years after on their seminal CRX album. I have written about it for @Ilfoglio , on newsstands this weekend. 'Sopra il petto dei granata il tricolore risplenderà'

Ciao Adriano, what’s up? I know, I know. Them Sinner and Alcaraz kids, they got nothing on you. Don’t feel bad about it. The hair? Nothing compares to yours. The dancing? He’s clearly never been to Jackie ‘O, nor boogied with Loredana. And the polo shirts? Where has the gentle caress of pique cotton gone? What has it been of Fila White Line’s glorious pinstripe? Good guys don’t wear white, you’re right. Perhaps that’s why you never bothered winning Wimbledon. The tennis court is a performance stage, used to say McEnroe. I hear you Adriano, the performative ones now are the PRs, no more room for mavericks, like yourself. That’s why we cared about putting together a book about you and those like you, who could play and – most of all – dress. And we wouldn't be thinking of tennis like we do if it wasn't for you lot, and @filaeurope of course. It’s called Fila: Timelapse and it's published by @rizzolibooks . @poeticallypunk curated it and comes with over 300 pages of archive gems and writings by yours truly and many other exquisite connoisseurs, like @frances_mrt @galluzzo.michele @antonelligram @unicamens and @silviaventurinifendi . The design is from Milanese dons @francescovaltolina and @nicola_narbone at @cabinet_milano . Oh, there’s Damon Albarn too. Never heard of Blur? Never mind, it’s all about Oasis these days anyway. It came out over a year ago, you say? You’re right, guess I was too busy collecting Pimm’s cups to return to Wimbledon’s bar for cashback. Anyway, it’s a marvellous book, which goes well beyond tennis. Game, set, match.

You're cordially invited to Compliments of..., a stoned soul picnic of words in the form of a newsletter. Written by yours truly, publishing whenever I feel like. How pathetic, how millennial of me, etc etc.
