'I’m living in a haunted house, inhabited by a ghost Paul and I made together, a “we” that doesn’t exist anymore, not in the present anyway, but it has penetrated all the rooms. It’s a hugging, touching, lovemaking, laughing, soothing, arguing, quietly talking double figure of the past with secret jokes and references known only to “us.”'
We are thrilled to reveal the cover for Ghost Stories by Siri Hustvedt. Coming 5 May.
The signed edition is available to pre-order from Waterstones and independent bookshops at the link in our bio.

With her memoir Ghost Stories, Siri Hustvedt has written a deeply moving account of grief. At home in Brooklyn, the author and essayist tells @kittygrady about the cognitive splintering that followed the death of her husband, the author Paul Auster, finding a form for her mourning, and the power of the senses in conjuring the deceased. If you had told me when I started The Shift podcast almost six years ago that some of these conversations would be the privilege of my life, I would never have believed you, but oh how they are.
Today’s guest is one of my favourite writers, the acclaimed and (I thought) intimidatingly brainy @sirihustvedt . (Brainy, she is. Intimidating, definitely not.) Amongst others, she wrote one of my most beloved books, What I Loved, the brilliant The Shaking Woman (or a history of my nerves) and now the utterly generous, tender, one of a kind memoir, Ghost stories, about her long love with Paul Auster and the year after losing him. It is destined to join the canon. Read it, seriously. I won’t give you your money back bc I haven’t got any, but I would if I did, that’s how good it is.
Siri and I talked about:
- why nobody talks about long love
- why she believes in - if not ghosts, then something!
- learning not to feel guilty about being “outspoken”
- how enduring relationships mould us
- the luckiness of not having a brother
- how grief made her creaky
- the media endlessly crediting Paul with her work
and so so so much more
It’s sad, it’s joyous, it’s wonderful

My daughter, @sophieauster , is soon going on tour in Germany. I was just there for Ghost Stories, but we didn’t overlap. There was a moment earlier in her life, before she met her husband, @spencerostrander , and before their son, Miles, was born when she, her father, Paul, and I were all traveling here and there at various times for our work, and Paul jokingly took to calling the three of us “The Flying Wallendas” after the famous circus family. Sophie wrote that little family joke into her song “Blue Team,” which she wrote for father before he died. He loved it, as do I.

Book tours are always whirlwind events, but they also give a writer a chance to look into the faces of readers and exchange some words with them, and this is a gift. Writers work alone. Solitude is crucial, but after Paul’s death, I have spent more time alone than at any time of my life. Meeting readers, shaking their hands, listening to them tell me stories about my books and their lives has been a tonic for me. I am deeply grateful.
