There are deeper macro and micro cosmic reasons why this project feels particularly salient right now. Something to bring into focus the power of growth, love, empathy and connection through music all of which is throughline in why I do the things that I do. Time to walk that talk!

The last few weeks has been the stuff of dreams. I had the opportunity to continue as a #composer for @giannaburright ‘s choreographic residency at @baryshnikovartscenter in #nyc This was a collaborative creative process composing for what is now a 40 minute dance work-in-progress, with the incredible dancers @allennatalie@nicole_hagen and @heyalexxrixx under Gianna’s brilliant #choreography and direction. The environment, artists, and artistry that I’ve been immersed in during the past few weeks has been the kind of place I’ve dreamed of and imagined myself being a part of since childhood.
I remember being 12 and deciding that I would be a musician when I grew up. I committed myself to a strict regiment of practice then, with some idea of how hard I’d need to work to get there. Practicing hard and dedicating myself to this craft has been extraordinarily challenging. I have considered abandoning this path numerous times, and moments like this make me so grateful for my own perseverance, and for all those around me who believe in me enough to kick my butt when I need it most. I’ve always dreamed of being in these kinds of creative spaces, and for that to have actually happened feels completely surreal. I am so, unendingly grateful. I feel so lucky. I am so exhausted. The kind of exhaustion that you feel when you’ve given everything you’ve got to accomplish something you really really believe in, and yet it feeds you so much that you just want to keep giving. This little piano kid inside me that dreamed so big so long ago is fist bumping the air and jumping up and down saying YAHOO!
I could not give enough thanks to Gianna Burright for inviting me into this multi-year project as a composer. Gianna, I love, respect, admire and trust you so deeply. This level of trust and respect we share, is a huge gift in my life. A massive thank you from the depths of my soul to Baryhsnikov Arts for believing in this work enough to give Gianna and the rest of us a chance to push this further and take it one step closer into it being the BIG show that it wants to be. I can’t wait to see where this all will continue to go…

A brief interruption to your regularly scheduled programming to announce the upcoming Salad!
What is Salad you may ask? It’s a community arts event hosted in our home in Brooklyn that I curate alongside @stephen.sideb and in collaboration with a whole community of folks, featuring multimedia artists in an exhibit/performance showcase. Think Tiny Desk for all kinds of artists.
In the last edition of Salad, we wheatpasted a photograph taken by @gaby_ravy as seen in the last slide. It was so hard to take down such an epic piece, we were sad to say goodbye. And, at the same time, it’s a reminder of impermanence, the changing of seasons, that each receding tide makes way for another rising one that brings with it new treasures. After all, a Salad must be consumed to be enjoyed.

I'm SO excited to be teaming up with the amazing @siobear for the debut of our performance duo, SHINOBEE. We're hosting an intimate house concert + jam where we will improvise with piano, voice and storu fir an unbroken hour, inviting folks to share their gifts throughout.
