The program features a range of short works, including a new collaboration between dancers Jacinte Armstrong and Solène Bernier with acclaimed Acadian artist François Gaudet; a new graphic score by Norm Adams; a duet by Lydia Zimmer and Anastasia Wiebe; and Marrin Jessome’s latest trio, Glass Plate No. 3. Armstrong will also perform I Chart en acadien, an Acadian variation of her solo choreographed by Sarah Chase, and Brandon Auger will present his object-based sound performance near-field (10), following its tour across Canada last summer. Salon des Refusés brings together finished and in-progress works in a shared space of experimentation and exchange, featuring performances by Jacinte Armstrong, Lydia Zimmer, Anastasia Wiebe, Solène Bernier, Norm Adams, and Brandon Auger, with visual art by François Gaudet, choreography by Sarah Chase, and other special guests. JACINTE ARMSTRONG (elle) est une artiste acadienne basée à Kjipuktuk/Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse. Son travail explore la pratique incarnée à travers la performance, la chorégraphie, la collaboration et le commissariat. Using somatic practices, improvisation, and simple prompts, participants explore embodiment, space, and time. Through guided exercises, you will uncover performance within everyday actions. We are the movement of water on land. At the most intrinsic level of our being, like the ocean, we undulate, pulsate, arc and spiral. When we slow down and pay attention to these biological movements, they teach us about the art of being – in the body, in the moment, in life. In these workshops, we will explore a variety of breaths and vocalized sounds that stimulate the fluid system; engage in a fluid range of non-patterned movement from a micro to macro level and in different relationships to gravity; and with our presence, silently attend to the sensations and movements that emerge. Linda Rabin brings to her teaching 50 years of experience in the fields of dance, movement education, coaching and directing. In her earlier professional life she was a choreographer, dance teacher and co-founder of l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal (founded in 1981). In the 1990’s Linda turned her attention to somatic education and became a certified practitioner of Body-Mind Centering®, and an authorized teacher of Continuum, the practice that is at the heart of her teaching today. As an international Continuum workshop leader, Linda teaches in her native Montreal, in Canada, Europe and Asia. It has been such a pleasure to be at the Festival of New Dance so far, first in Corner Brook, and this weekend in St. John’s. I’m looking forward to sharing I Chart, choreographed by Sarah Chase, tonight on a lively mixed bill. I will share a new version of I Chart that Sarah and I are working on- en acadien- in a studio showing tomorrow morning. Excited for both!!
