Dear Mr. The Boss, Martine surprised me with floor seats to my first Bruce show last night at Barclays. During 10th Ave (my favorite), you shook my hand. A surreal moment. I wrote about it on my substack (sinkane.substack.com) The following slide is Martine’s video capturing the moment. Just wanted to say thank you for the music, the energy, and the reminder of what purpose looks like.

Yesterday was my last class of the semester at Mercy University. Exam day. Which, in this case, meant everyone had to play a song they wrote using at least three music theory concepts from the semester. Secondary dominants. Modal interchange. Delayed resolution. Tiny emotional manipulations disguised as ā€œassignments.ā€ And one by one, before playing their songs, many of them would issue a disclaimer. ā€œThis is really simple.ā€ ā€œMine is kind of dumb.ā€ ā€œI didn’t do much.ā€ It’s fascinating how human beings do this. We build a thing. Then we apologize for the thing. Before anyone can react. Like putting bubble wrap around your own self esteem. Then they’d play the song. And the class would applaud. Not polite applause either. Real applause. The kind that says: you made something. We recognize that. We know how hard that is. So I found myself becoming accidentally motivational. Telling them not to minimize themselves. Not to shrink in advance. A friend of mine says this to himself every morning before leaving the house: ā€œI am brave. I am strong. I am kind. I am smart.ā€ Yes, yes. I know. Very Stuart Smalley. Very public access television therapist. Very ā€œlive laugh loveā€ adjacent. But honestly? It works. So after my little end of semester sermon, I wrote it on the board and made the entire class repeat it back to me. Over and over. A room full of college students chanting affirmations in a music theory classroom in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Strange world. Beautiful world. Next semester they move on to higher levels of theory with another professor. More diminished chords. More suffering. Notation! I’ll miss them though. And I’m very proud of what they made this year.

You don’t get many chances to flip the script in a room like Blue Note Jazz Club… so I figured: why not actually do it? This one’s different. Instead of just pulling up with the usual format, I wanted to open the stage up. Bring friends into the mix. Let the night stretch, bend, surprise us. Make it feel alive in a way that only happens when musicians are really listening to each other. This is also a tribute to the room itself. Blue Note isn’t just a venue, it’s a lineage. So the idea is simple: honor that history by leaning all the way into musicality. No autopilot. No phoning it in. Just players playing. Two sets. Special guests. Moments that won’t happen the same way twice. If you’ve seen us before: this won’t be that. If you haven’t: this is the one.
