Head in the Stars, 2022 πŸ‘οΈ Kensuke Koike 27x24cm Unique Accompanied by a signed certificate of Authenticity β€œI always think that limiting freedom can push me to surpass my capacity and imagination and it’s true. Cutting into the original photograph is always really important for me for that reason. It allows me to understand deeper the possibilities given by one single image.” – @kensukekoike , 2022 Kensuke Koike (b.1980, Japan) creates unique artwork by manipulating found, vintage, photographic material. Kensuke’s approach revolves around the idea of using the assets found within an image to create a contemporary visual with a new narrative. @odprintsales : How do you select the portraits you use? @kensukekoike : I often use human faces because even small changes can give a strong feeling of discomfort or joy. I have always been fascinated by this. It’s like magic or a supernatural phenomenon. . Excerpt from publication in conjunction with de/re CONSTRUCT exhibition, published by @schoeniprojects (2022) AN INTERVIEW WITH KENSUKE KOIKE With Tom Page, Director of Open Doors Gallery . πŸ“Έ Kensuke Koike, Close-up details of Conscience, 2022 @nicksmithphoto Artwork: 4.8 x 4 cm Frame: 30 x 25 cm πŸ“§ [email protected] . Courtesy of Schoeni Projects and Open Doors Gallery Copyright The Artist

de/re CONSTRUCT | Now Open Come on in… "Before I used archival images, I was shooting photographs on my own and altering them. But because I had the negatives and originals, I could make mistakes in the cutting and altering of them – I could just print another copy of an image and start all over again. I began to use archival images because I wanted to try something more challenging and delve deeper into the meaning of an image. More risk means that I have to think twice before cutting the originals, and that is important,” – @kensukekoike de/re CONSTRUCT Tanabe Chikuunsai IV & Sawako Kaijima and OD artist Kensuke Koike 21 Oct – 6 Nov, 2022 Wing Gallery | @cromwellplace | London Wednesday-Sunday, 10.00 – 18.00 Organised by @schoeniprojects In collaboration with @odprintsales @wamono_art Supported by @GBSasakawa @asianartinlondon Open Doors Gallery Exhibitions | Artwork | Books Use #odtakeovers to be featured

"Very old photographs can’t really tell their stories because they have gone with the memories of their owners. They are like vessels adrift after breaking their moorings. Each one of us can let our imagination wander. We can grant them a new story.” - Kensuke Koike . #dereCONSTRUCT Exhibition Artists: Tanabe Chikuunsai IV @chikuunsai4 & Sawako Kaijima and Kensuke Koike @kensukekoike πŸ“Wing Gallery 2/F Cromwell Place, SW7 2JE London πŸ—“ 21 October - 6 November 2022 πŸ•° Wed-Sat: 10.00-18.00; Sun: 10.00-16.00 . Organised by @schoeniprojects In collaboration with @odprintsales @wamono_art Supported by @GBSasakawa @asianartinlondon

The cut is Koike's medium. Slicing, collaging, and weaving are his methods. Scissors, scalpels, and even a pasta maker are his tools. Some works in his other ongoing series, "Today's Curiosity," are less restrictive, often cut, torn, and rebuilt into three-dimensional objects, while others become videos that record the process of the image's transformation. . #dereCONSTRUCT Exhibition Artists: Tanabe Chikuunsai IV @chikuunsai4 & Sawako Kaijima and Kensuke Koike @kensukekoike πŸ“Wing Gallery 2/F Cromwell Place, SW7 2JE London πŸ—“ 21 October - 6 November 2022 πŸ•° Wed-Sat: 10.00-18.00; Sun: 10.00-16.00 . Organised by @schoeniprojects In collaboration with @odprintsales @wamono_art Supported by @GBSasakawa @asianartinlondon

β€œSome time ago, browsing through old photographs in a flea market, two group portraits caught my eye. Of the eight women in the first photo, six appeared in the other photo as well. I recognized them from their faces, not their dresses, which were different. No clue as to what photo was shot first. On the reverse, both bore the same studio imprint, a photographer of the First World War. I asked myself the reason why there were eight in one photo and only six in the other. What happened to the missing two? Did they quarrel, lose touch with each other, move to another town or simply die young?" - Kensuke Koike . #dereCONSTRUCT Exhibition Artists: Tanabe Chikuunsai IV @chikuunsai4 & Sawako Kaijima and Kensuke Koike @kensukekoike πŸ“Wing Gallery 2/F Cromwell Place, SW7 2JE London πŸ—“ 21 October - 6 November 2022 πŸ•° Wed-Sat: 10.00-18.00; Sun: 10.00-16.00 . Organised by @schoeniprojects In collaboration with @odprintsales @wamono_art Supported by @GBSasakawa @asianartinlondon

"I always worked on smaller scale works in the past because I used unique, found photographic prints and that determined the size... When I worked using these images, I concentrated on the image itself and not on how to present it as such." - Kensuke Koike (2022) . #dereCONSTRUCT Exhibition Artists: Tanabe Chikuunsai IV @chikuunsai4 & Sawako Kaijima and Kensuke Koike @kensukekoike πŸ“Wing Gallery 2/F Cromwell Place, SW7 2JE London πŸ—“ 21 October - 6 November 2022 πŸ•° Wed-Sat: 10.00-18.00; Sun: 10.00-16.00 . Organised by @schoeniprojects In collaboration with @odprintsales @wamono_art Supported by @GBSasakawa @asianartinlondon . Photo by Kensuke Koike
