Finally got my hands on a geofon as I had a feeling it would be more useful in triggering motors than recording sounds - proving my point with some feedback through motors at @interfaceinagh
At @interfaceinagh I’m developing a project that channels environmental sound to activate motors and devices to create interventions in any location…
Thanks go to @sonic_rubbish for suggesting something along these lines a couple of years ago.
Full videos with sounds from close up and inside pipes will be available on my YouTube channel very soon
Sadly I have to leave Göreme before my work “Made to Malfunction” is installed properly but I do like this temporary setup to test everything is (mal)functioning as it should…
All the best to @kapadokyabienali and thank you for retrieving the work from Türkiye airport security
Last day in Göreme… work still not installed because of issues at the site but it’s been a nice visit!
Shots towards the end are from a couple of days ago
Upcoming - I’ll be in residence with @interfaceinagh for three weeks in May but also playing a couple of shows in Ireland - this one has kindly been set up by @philmaguire_ who will also play and @plugdrecords in Cork.
It’ll be my first time there and really looking forward to it!
What an incredibly amazing place! My work certainly allows me to visit some beautiful parts of the world I would not have had the chance to experience otherwise!
Thank you @kapadokyabienali for bringing me and my work (hopefully - story for another day) here!!
Reception is proud to present the Irish debut of UK composer and artist Simon Whetham alongside Galilea Roto (MX/IRE)!
(supported by Interface Inagh)
7.30pm - 09/05/2026 - tickets via RA or link in bio.
Since 2005 Simon Whetham has developed a practice of working with sonic activity as a material
for creation. He often uses environmental sound, employing a variety of methods and techniques
in order to obtain often unnoticed and obscured sonic phenomena. He explores ways of creating
physical traces of sound, and of channelling and transforming energy, most recently salvaging
and repurposing obsolete consumer technology.
Collaborations with sound artists/musicians include long term projects with Tarab (Eamon Sprod) and Gregory Büttner, and past collaborators include Scanner, Derek Piotr, Iris Garrelfs, John Grzinich, Ryu Hankil, Xenia Pestova, Alan Courtis, Kate Carr, Rhodri Davies, Christine Schörkhuber and Slavek Kwi.
Galilea Roto is an audiovisual artist from Nuevo León, Mexico, whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses drawing, tattoo, poetry, video, and experimental music. Her work navigates the intersection of the personal and the collective, engaging with themes such as language, migration, “home,” pain, and sound as a vessel of memory. Through a combination of lived experience and research, she creates a dialogue between individual and communal narratives. Each piece fosters reflection, attentive listening, and emotional resonance while challenging the conventions of traditional media.
I’m very happy to be able to announce that I have been selected as one of the participants of the @brittenpearsarts residencies 2026-27!
As I stated with my recent presentation at @divfuse I rarely have projects in the uk so thank you to @brittenpearsarts for the opportunity to develop my project with you.
