Not sure when
@christinelagarde , Jean-Claude Trichet and Mario Draghi last shared a room, but seeing three defining figures of Europe’s financial history together at tonight’s dinner ahead of the International Charlemagne Prize (
@karlspreis_ac ) of Aachen felt special and was a remarkable warm-up for an important day tomorrow.
Since 1950, the Charlemagne Prize has honored individuals and institutions shaping European unity, from
@ursulavonderleyen to pioneers like Alcide De Gasperi. This year, it rightly goes to Mario Draghi for steering Europe through fragile moments while helping define what comes next. His competitiveness report is a timely wake-up call for a stronger, more innovative and sovereign Europe.
A big thank you to Bernd Vincken and his entire
@karlspreis_ac Foundation team 🙏🏾🫶🏾for this unique invitation, including today’s Europa Forum (which is a vital platform for debating Europe’s future amid geopolitical pressure, economic transformation and democratic fragility). I really liked the strong opening remarks by
@armin_laschet and Aachen’s mayor Michael Ziemons. My personal highlights included Walter Pasquarelli’s talk on „How generative AI is reshaping the economy“ and the “Europe in a world of hard power” panel, where Estonian’s minister of defense
@hannopevkur offered a clear-eyed perspective on security and resilience. Equally inspiring: conversations on technological sovereignty, including great contributions from North Rhine-Westphalia’s minister of economy
@monaneubaur and a strong call from
@voltfang CEO David Oudsandji to make Germany bolder and less risk-averse in the global innovation race.
I was also glad to hear that
@avyanshh and his team at
@eunexus.ee won first prize at the European Charlemagne Youth Prize with Project Athena, a powerful initiative strengthening democratic participation and leadership among young women. Honored to have experienced it firsthand at the
@tallinnuniversity last year. Congratulations, my friend.
Can’t wait for day two and tomorrow’s official Charlemagne Prize ceremony!
