‘Throughout your career, you have established yourself as one of the most uncompromising voices in British cinema. Your work consistently explores challenging subject matter with intellectual curiosity, visual imagine and emotional honesty. Your latest film, Crushed, stands as a deeply unsettling psychological drama that confronts audiences with some of the darker corners of human experience. Such filmmaking requires not only artistic vision but also courage, particularly within an industry where safer commercial choices are often favoured. By continuing to pursue bold, thoughtful storytelling you exemplify the spirit of independent film making and the importance of artistic freedom within the horror genre. Massive thanks to @lawriebrewster , @megantremethick and @britishhorrorstudio for this fantastic inaugural award decided on by the jury for best director from the British Horror Studio.

Legends don’t die, their stories just multiply. # First time I met Udo Kier was in Cluj-Napoca for the Transylvania Film Fest. His eyes were quite a shock, piercing, diamond cutting, his hand shake, lingering. We chatted, I told him about The Living and The Dead, he said he’d come to see it. A lot of people say that kinda thing and don’t turn up. Udo turned up, sat in the front row, couldn’t stop raving about it afterwards which was gratifying. The next day, we went to a party in a club. We walked down the stairs past the cloakroom but the cloakroom would let us walk past it. We had to put our coats in the cloakroom. Udo didn’t want to. You have to. Udo didn’t want to. Well you can’t come into the club. Udo wasn’t drinking at the time cos he had to pass a fitness test for an upcoming film/insurance. The staff there weren’t very cool but Udo wasn’t bothered and went home. The next day, there was a photo of Udo on the front page of the national Romanian newspaper. ‘The Devil gets kicked out of Club-Napoca club’ the headline read. ………………………. The second time I met him was ten years later in Sitges. Someone there organised a drink between us in the Melia bar. He didn’t remember who I was or The Living and The Dead but he was very gracious and we chatted for half an hour or so about why he was there, why I was there, etc, etc. This time I took a photo……………..more below……
