With Love Comes Loss
I don’t usually post about my personal life on social media, and so I’ve never shared the tragedy that struck my family exactly six months ago today.
Without knowing the context, some of you may not fully understand this post, but I’m sure it won’t take much guessing when you watch this storyboarded sequence of mine from How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
A couple of weeks ago, while preparing for a presentation, I was searching for a storyboarded sequence of mine to showcase. I had almost forgotten about these boards, but the moment I played them, I broke down. The words in the sequence, written by @DeanDeblois , suddenly carried a far deeper meaning than they did when I worked on it back in 2017.
What makes it even more painful is that this version is scratch-voiced by my son, Max, opposite @gerardbutler ’s Stoick. He was only 8 years old when he spoke those lines—never knowing they might one day become his reality.
Just a few weeks ago, the daughter of a close friend asked me the very same question Hiccup asks Stoick here. I wish I’d had Dean’s wisdom to answer with the same eloquence as his writing. Instead, I faltered and simply said: “I don’t know.”
So today, with a heavy heart on this half-year anniversary, I send a kiss to an angel and thank her for the greatest gift of all.
